This downtown hotel is decidedly Italian -- custom cherry furnishings in a neoclassical style are found throughout the lobby and in each of the guest rooms, many of which overlook courtyards. I instantly felt like I was somewhere in Tuscany. Choose between two-story townhouse suites with jetted tubs or a sleep-under the stars option in the 'Starlight Room' which offers conservatory windows for stargazing from your bed. Evening wine tasting by the fireside living room is another nice touch.

It's not surprising that such a popular restaurant has made its name on its wood-stove-smoked meats and seafoods. There has to be some trick or magic to it, because their "house classics" wow crowds: pepper-scented king salmon, Oregon chicken, rib-eye steaks, and Diablo pork loin with "smashers" (garlic mashed potatoes). Luscious desserts include banana cream pie and an old-fashioned devil's food cake.

A great experience -- especially with children. The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, the jewel of all Portland's museums, is living proof that science is best learned through exploring -- active, engaging, surprising journeys into the past and future. There's more here than the most engaged science buff can see in a day.

How could a retail outlet be considered an attraction? Nike's headquarters are in Portland, making this spot the original futuristic museum of sports and an interactive mecca of motion. Nike went to extraordinary lengths to showcase the best that athletics can bring out in people through interactive video, playstations, inspiring memorabilia, virtual reality product testing and hands-on try outs of equipment. They didn't skimp on the flash, sounds and tastes of the game. It's a great locale to frequent before a Blazers game, and occasionally sports greats will make personal appearances at the 'town.'

The market
Saturday Market has, over the years, become a staple of Portland's weekend scene. Held from March through Christmas on both Saturdays and Sundays, it's one of the community's best-loved and most widely attended ongoing events. You'll wander through a historic neighborhood while street musicians serenade, vendors offer everything from fresh-cut flowers to international foods, and more than 300 booths display art and every other imaginable creation. Feels like a cross between Carnival and a colorful flea market.

The Square
Affectionately dubbed Portland's living room, this giant piazza serves as a communal front porch, a people-watching spot and an architectural wonder. It's also one of the first places folks should hit when they arrive downtown. What's not to enjoy? Roman columns line the south end of the square. An amphitheater -- designed so flawlessly that you'll barely notice it -- boasts day and dusk concerts. And the travel branch of Powell's Bookstore literally tunnels under one side of the square. On warm days you can soak your feet in the purple tile fountain while choosing from gourmet coffees or traditional hot dogs (the vendors bark for your business). And if you happen to be hanging around come high noon, the famed two-story weather machine, complete with whistles, mist blower, lights, trumpet blasts and moving electronic creatures, can alternately startle and delight.
