The natural views around the city are here for anyones pleasure. The old streets are narrow and many carry no traffic. Many buildings have beautiful wrought-iron trade signs. This year there were many fiberglass cows for advertising. They were colorful and made good photo back-drops.
At the end of the season they will be auctioned off to the public. The Fortress Hohen Salzburg is easily accessed via funicular or a brisk walk and the views are wonderful. (see pictures). A must is attendance at the Marionetten Theater. We saw The Magic Flute - it was marvelous.
Quick Tips:
We founbd the most wonderful hotel on a central street next to the Dom. It's called Zur Goldenen Ente (the golden duck) and it's restaurant must be the best in Salzburg. Make reservations early if you go there for Festival time. If you want to go to the Marionatten Theater go on the internet to 'Salzburg' and you can order the tickets right there and pick them up when you get to the theater.
Best Way To Get Around:
In Salzburg you only need to walk. There are tour buses for the surrounding lake district which is delightful to drive through. If you care, you can go on a Fiaker (Horse-drawn carriage) which is fun if the weather is good. Remember, the Salzkammergut (the area around Salzburg is known for it's frequent showers).
