The Marriott is a short walk from the main Railway Station across the Limmat River. Mainly a "business" hotel, but caters for the holiday market as well. There are lake view and city view rooms.

We had lake view rooms with fabulous views over the old city and the lake. The room had king bed, mini bar, satellite TV, and daily American newspaper. The hotel is five-star and has all amenities one would require on holiday!

Since we were traveling mainly by train, the closeness to the railway station made it very easy.

Mt Pilatus

Lucerne is about an hour from Zurich by train, which leaves every 30 minutes. The tourist office in the station can do bookings for the Mt Pilatus Excursion. We took another train to Alpanchstad (20 minutes approximately) and then the Cog railway (40 minutes) to the top of Mt Pilatus. It was an exhilarating experience as the gradient at times was more than 40 degrees! At 2132 metres, there are two hotels and a couple of restaurants as well. There are well marked hiking trails as well. Hiking trails start from Fräkmüntegg. The views from the top were awesome! The Golden Panoramic Express is a scenic train which runs from Lucerne to Montreux through Central Switzerland--The Golden Pass. The entire journey is made up of three parts and involves change of trains due to different gauge. The routing is: Lucerne – Interlaken – Zweisimmen - Montreux. Swiss Pass, Eurail Pass, and Europass are fully covered on the entire journey.

The coaches have large panoramic windows and make a few stops along the way in pretty little villages. Gives a chance to see the quintessial Switzerland--rolling hills and half-timbered houses.

The full journey is about 6 hours, but you can do sectors on the Panoramic Express.
