Texas Hill Country

An August 2003 trip to Canyon Lake by bluedolphin61

Quote: The Hill Country is a beautiful area of Texas. We enjoyed tubing on the Guadalupe River. We would recommend The Shanty on FM 306 for tubing the river. For those in the military, be sure to take advantage of Fort Sam Houston's Recreation Area's (located right off of FM 306 at Canyon Lake)discounted boats and water recreation rentals.

We really enjoyed Shamu's show (watched both day and night shows as they are different). We did the Dine with Shamu (additional cost) -- the food was good, and the trainers were on hand for questions and pictures the entire time. Shamu was tableside and did a private show. We also did the Behind the Scenes Tour -- it was interesting and informative. The Sea Lion Show was funny. The ski show was impressive. The Bulaga Whale and Dolphin show was spectacular.

We are rollercoaster fanatics. Enjoyed Superman. The Rattler was the best wood roller coaster we have been on so far. Poltergiest sounded awesome, but was disappointing. Also took in the Chinese Acrobat show. It was awesome!

Park is divided into two parts. Schlitterbahn West is the original park and is very shady. Highly recommend doing this part in the afternoon when it is hotter and the shade is most appreciated. Also this part is easy to do without swimshoes or sandals. Schlitterbahn East is the newer part and is not at all shady. Highly recommend doing this part in the morning before it gets hotter. Do your feet a favor and be sure to wear swimshoes or sandals for this part of the park. Master Blaster and Family Blaster (both in the East park) are uphill water coasters. We hit Master Blaster at a good time and wait was only 1 to 1 1/2 hours long. It is not unusual for it to be 3+ hours though. Boogie Bahn (also ...Read More
