Summertime at the Surf Club

An August 2003 trip to Marco Island by robinmurphy

We stayed at the Surf Club Beach Resort, which was a perfect location right on the beach. The beach, sunsets, and shelling were the best part of the trip!

We took our two-year-old son with us so we stayed mainly at the resort and spent time on the beach and in the pool. There are shells everywhere in Marco on the beach so it is great to walk along the beachshore and collect shells and see all of the other resorts.

They have wonderful seafood restuarants to choose from in Marco! One of our favorites was the Snook Inn, which was on the Harbour. Their motto is, "You catch it, we cook it!" I recommend the seafood buffett where they have everything to peel and eat shrimp, steamed crab claws, oysters, clams, etc. I would call ahead that day to find out what the buffet is and definetly recommend that you hit the seafood buffet. Go early because they fill up fast! They have great outdoor seating as well as indoor seating and normally have live entertainment while you eat.

There are also lots of cute old-time ice cream parlors that have wonderful sweet treats. Check out Sweet Anne's or The Chocolate Strawberry.

Quick Tips:

If you like to eat in, there are two main grocery stores within driving distance on the island.

We took our son to the Caribbean Gardens Naples Zoo. It was wonderful! We got to see an alligator feeding and take a boat ride to see their "Island of Monkeys."

Although we didn't check it out, the Everglades National Park is only about 1.5 hours away and is supposed to be a great day trip to take.

Plan your events for what you want to do for early in the day. In the summertime, it tends to rain towards the evening, but not for long at all.

Best Way To Get Around:

Since it is on an island and the closest airports are either Fort Myers or Naples, it is highly recommended that you get a car. This also makes it convenient for grocery runs and going out to eat at night. There are many scooter rentals or bike rentals on the island if you decide you want to see Marco that way too.

Best Things Nearby:
The beach! Couldn't ask for a better view or location. Also nearby to many restaurants, grocery stores, shopping, etc. Great location for families.

Best Things About the Resort:
The location! We were right on the beach. Also, the view we had was wonderful. If you are lucky to have an ocean view, you have a great big balcony that opens up not only from your family room, but from the master bedroom as well. They have some tables, chairs, and two chaise lounges out on the balcony. Great place to watch sunsets or lightning storms at night!

Resort Experience:
We had a very nice, big, two-bedroom unit. It had a full kitchen that pretty much had everything we needed. The master bedroom had a king-size bed in it, as well as a private bath and a screened-in door that led out to the balcony. The second bedroom had two twin beds and a bathroom right next to it. The dining room had a full-size table and chairs and a bar that some high bar chairs to sit in. The family room had a TV/VCR and a screened door that lead to the balcony. The only thing that would have been nice was a washer and dryer. They do have them on site and you can use them for a charge, but it would have been nice to have in the unit itself just to dry towels, etc.

The pool is nothing fancy, but it met our needs just fine and always has lots of families out there. They have two outdoor gas grills that guests can use and they provide the lighters for you. By the grills, they have an eating area that is like a bar. They have a giftshop on site, game room with books and games, etc.

The staff was very friendly and helped recommend local restaurants for us to try out.

The outside of the resort definetely needed a face-lift and some new paint, etc. However, I would recommend this resort for a family vacation.
