family vacation in the smokey mountains

A July 2003 trip to Great Smoky Mountains National Park by sherrygoes

In Cosby Tennessee, 30 miles from Gatlinberg, away from the rush Baum Mountain Cabins rents beautiful log cabins on a weekly basis. We paid only $500 for the cabin for the week. We were close enough to the national park, but far enough away from the tourist towns.

These cabins are beautiful. They're actually set on a mountain surrounded by the forest, but have all the comforts of home. Will sleep six comfortably. Make sure you take a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Beautiful scenery. Set aside as much time as possible to drive through the Smokey Mountains.

Quick Tips:

Dollywood is fun for the whole family, and if you buy your tickets after 2pm, you can spend six hours that day, and the ticket will get you admission the following day for the entire day. I've seen plenty of shows before, but the best dinner show was Black Bear Jamboree. Make sure to ride the rapids. Prices vary -- Wahoo has a 2.5 hour trip for each.

Best Way To Get Around:

Driving is the best way to get to the national park; however, once there, there is plenty of walking if you're up to it. If not, there are many beautiful things to see from your car. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge have public trolleys. In the mountains, you can drive, hike, or bike.
Cabins are rented by the night for $100 or weekly for $500. Two bedrooms with queen-size beds, living room has queen-size fold-out. Fully equipped kitchen, just bring your groceries. Living room has wood-burning fireplace, wood is supplied during season. This is a beautiful country log cabin. Wrap-around porch with rockers and a jacuzzi for four. This is by far the nicest cabin we have ever stayed in.

The price per person includes meal, drink, dessert, and show. The meal is served per course to you at your table. The show is excellent, enjoyable for children and adults alike. This is a non-smoking theater.

Attraction

Dollywood sets in the foothills of the Smokey Mountains. Very family-oriented. Smoking only permitted in designated smoking areas. A lot of beautiful flower gardens, shows (for young and old alike), shops, crafters making their crafts, an aviary with eagles, and, of course, plenty of rides. The town is very commercialized, so a lot of traffic to get there.
