Beautiful Sarajevo

A travel journal to Sarajevo by Katie Morgan

Quote: Sarajevo has a long, varied history. The city reflects that, with Olympic games structures, modern high-rises, Austrian elegance, and much older buildings, to include ancient forts and remnants of the city's protective wall and gates. Definitely worth the trip.

You must visit the 'Tunel' museum by the airport and visit the market in 'Stari Grad' (Old City). I enjoyed my visit to the Turkish fort on the east side, had a delicious, spit-roasted lamb for dinner, and watched men playing chess with two-foot high pieces.Quick Tips: Be very cautious about walking in grassy areas. Stay on paved roads or well-worn paths unless the area has been declared mine free (like the Vrelo Bosna park area). There are still land mines in the area as evidenced by the death of four children in a field on the south side of town (summer 2000).Best Way To Get Around: Sarajevo sits in a long, narrow valley with rather steep sides. The mass transportation system i...Read More

For starters, visit http://hotelgrand.com/. I've not stayed here personally, but have heard a number of rave reviews about the services for the price paid. The bed & breakfast rate is the best since there are so many great places to eat inexpensively within a short distance. I've heard its a much better deal than the Holiday Inn--known for its position on sniper alley, but way overpriced now that things are peaceful here.

Restaurant

The restaurant is down an alley and then in the basement of one of the buildings. The place is not your typical four walls--little nooks and cranies with hidden treasures with clocks throughout. They serve great local food and traditional fare as well. Both times I've visited, I've had the filet mignon with bernaise. Very tasty for 20 DM. The typical clientele seems to be United Nations members, NATO Stabilization Forces, and other internationals. It is obviously worth a visit.

Wonderful evening out on the deck with a beautiful view overlooking a small river. The restaurant/hotel is not too far from a Roman-erected bridge (an impressive site reserved for another discussion). Our small group bought lamb and potatoes. Everything was wonderful.

This beautiful mountain spring is the head of the Bosna River. Vrelo means 'source,' hence Vrelo Bosna. A wonderful park surrounds the water flow, with picturesque bridges crossing over the water. The water springs from the hillside and forms a pool. The water cascades down from there. The city has built a gorgeous park area around the pools and streams that form the Bosna. There's a wonderful, glassed restaurant there that has a wonderful, inexpensive menu. Beyond the restaurant, there are a variety of playground toys for the younger children. As you walk up the stairs built into the hillside on the east, you rise up to a paved road that leads back to Ilidza. The hillside beyond displays a ...Read More

Beautiful -- surrounded by forests, this mountainside is a great place for a picnic, hiking, or just appreciating the ski jump site for the 1984 Winter Olympics.
