New Orleans: "Mardi Gras Mambo"

A May 2003 trip to New Orleans by Maralily

Having grown up in New Orleans, I can dispense a few tips.

Don't think that the madness of Bourbon Street is the only thing special about New Orleans. You will find the true flavor of New Orleans in the enchanting houses, dripping Spanish moss, the famous cities of the dead, antique shops, art galleries and some of the finest cooking on Earth (as long as you don't ask any questions about what it is you are eating.) But most come for Mardi Gras so I'll cover that first.

Quick Tips:

Invest in a money belt to ward off pick pockets.

Avoid the less traveled areas of the French Quarter. If you don't see tourists there,it is for good reason.

If you plan to flash, remember that it is illegal and while it probably won't get you busted, you will probably end up as a featured cheap drunken ho on some late night cable video sold for .95 of which you get none of the profits from.

On flashing: keep it on Bourbon Street. Flash at the St. Charles Street parades and you WILL be arrested.

You probably won't be able to find a taxi. They are all taken. Find parking early and pay the -15 to park.

Best Way To Get Around:

Take the street cars. It is a scenic ride and much better (and cheaper) than driving.

Carpool. Take the bus.

Igor's Garlic Clove RestaurantBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Igor's "

Igor's is a local hang out. The food is great and it is mostly Cajun, Creole, Seafood and the specialty is garlic dishes. There is a bar and dining area. This is one of the best places to be for the St. Charles Mardi Gras parades as it is not usually over crowded and you can get a table if you are fast moving enough. Excellent service and a good place to meet new friends.

Try the BBQ chicken, Shrimp Creole, roast garlic appetizer or their crawfish pies.

Restaurant | "Rue De La Course"

Rue is a local hang out coffee shop. There are several of them, but my local hangout was on the corner of Magazine St. and Race St. The building is unusual and was used in the film Miller's Crossing. They serve gourmet coffee and sweets. A fantastic place to write, paint, work on your laptop, or be creative. The coffee is good too. The staff is particularly cool. Don't forget to check out the bulletin board with all the local events pinned up on it.

Zara's is more than a po-boy shop and grocery. It is a New Orleans legacy. It is an experience. Just trust me. Ask for James.

Restaurant | "Gamay"

Gamay is amazing. Some of the best, most interesting food in New Orleans. It is runn by the new owner, Matt, who is young and innovative, a fantastic chef. The best cosmopolitans in town. Ask for the "chocolate thing that is not on the menu but everyone loves."
