The trail is a 10 foot wide path of compacted stone designed for hiking, jogging, walking, horseback riding and bicycling. Users of the Heritage Rail Trail can ride through the historic Howard Tunnel - the oldest continually operational rail tunnel in the world and visit Hanover Junction Railroad station, where President Abraham Lincoln stopped in route to give his famous Gettysburg Address.
