A travel journal to Sarasota by StudioZola

Quote: Sarasota is so beautiful and relaxing, I tend to forget all about work when I'm here. Unlike other "beach" destinations, Sarasota has so much to offer that even if tanning, swimming and boating are not your 'thing', boredom will never enter your vocabulary. Arts, education, entertainment and relaxation are what Sarasota is about.

Come to Sarasota to enjoy, relax, eat well and escape.

Overview

There are four distinct areas of Sarasota, each with their own personalities: Downtown Sarasota, including St. Armands Circle, Lido Key, Long Boat Key and Siesta Key. Each deserve their own journal.Quick Tips: Make it a week and relax. Don't rush to get anywhere. If you want to experience the downtown Sarasota lifestyle, I would stay somewhere on North Lido Beach. This is a favorite destination for many European tourists. This gives you access to the downtown arts/gallery scene, St. Armand's shopping and restaurants, the educational facilities near Mote Marina, and boating at Longboat key. Best Way To Get Around: A Car. Definately rent a car. A convertible if possible. Rent a ...Read More

This is a great place to have a beer, appetizers and a burger (the food's good, but not as good as the atmosphere and attitude). Recently they added a large patio and outdoor bar which makes this the perfect mingling nightspot for the locals. It is located in the downtown marina and offers a great view of the water and access through the dock ... if you are lucky enough to be arriving by boat. My annual trip to Sarasota is not complete unless a spend a sunset downstairs at Marina Jack. If you are interested, there is also a fine dining seafood restaurant upstairs. The food here is excellent.

I love to sit outside at a small table on the street and watch the people walk by on St. Armand's circle. I feel a little like I'm in Europe. The restaurant has a nice menu of fish, chicken and other typical spanish dishes but for a upscale meal, I would go next door to Cafe L'Europe. At Columbia, I usually sit outside and enjoy a few glasses of the world's best sangria, a bowl of cuban black bean soup and some cuban bread with cold butter. The signature salad is a nice extra sometimes. If you are in the mood for excellent Cuban food, head to Tampa.

St. Armand's Circle

Attraction

Tourist shops, upscale clothing, unique restaurants and art galleries, make for an appealing experience. Spend an afternoon meandering around, window shopping and eating a ice cream cone from Ben and Jerry's. This is just a short walk from Lido Beach and makes for a good break from an afternoon at the beach. Of course, St. Armand also offers high end shopping from Jacobsen's (department store) to Mondi. This is also a pleasant place to spend an evening eating at one of the following restaurants: Tommy Bahamas, Charley's Crab, Columbia, Cafe L'Europe or Hemmingway's.

There is plenty of parking and beach area on this large white sandy beach. Lido Key is a favorite destination of many European tourists, mostly German and French. I like this beach beacause of it's proximity to St. Armand's Circle. If you drive down the road further you will find Lido Beach. This beach features a snack bar, restrooms and volleyball.

Pelican Man's Bird Sanctuary

Attraction | "The Pelican Man's Bird Sanctuary"

Quote:
This is a nice experience, especially if you really like birds. But even if you don't it is an educational experience. It doesn't cost anything but they do request a donation. Actually it's not totally voluntary because I don't think they will let you in unless you pay up. This guy who calls himself The Pelican Man started rescuing injured birds many years ago and has since saved over 100,000 birds mostly hurt due to human contact. It is a nice quiet environment with several varieties of birds, including egrets, seagulls, woodstorks, and of course pelicans. Stop by to kill an afternoon or to support a good cause.
