One of my wife's co-workers owns a timeshare in Mazatlan and loves it there, so on her recommendation we went there for our second trip to Mexico. We stayed at the El Moro Tower at El Cid Mega Resort. The resort has a nice beach, in fact, the one good thing we found about the area was the beaches, but the resort was huge, with no really quiet areas by the pool. The city itself is a sprawling, polluted, ugly place, reminding me very much of Sacramento, CA. We found little to do outside the hotel zone. The one boat trip we took cruising along the coast and then snorkeling at Deer Island was not even that great. The water was murky for snorkeling and the trip itself was not that picturesque.
