A June 2003 trip
to Fresno by E. B.
Quote: I have been visiting Fresno for CSU Summer Arts since 1999. It's a month-long Arts Festival with events that are free to enrolled students. There are world-renowned artists who visit and workshop with the students. It's definitely worthwhile. Summer Arts will continue to be hosted at Fresno until summer 2005.
For drinks, they offer many coffee variations (mochas, cappuccinos, lattes, etc.) as well as smoothies and Italian sodas. There are also pre-packaged drinks that you can find at your local 7-11 or liquor store.
I like their sandwiches. I usually get something very light, like their tuna sandwich with sun-dried tomatoes and a side of Caesar salad. The prices are not too bad. The lunches are filling. They are great in the morning or afternoon.

Attraction | "El Mariachi Imperial de México"
The Mariachi group was wonderful as always. They really use this beautiful theater well. One of the band members goes nearly to the back of the theater and plays a number from the back. One of the students from the 1999 CSU Summer Arts class that workshopped with the Mariachis was so good that she was asked to become a band member. She has sang in the Tower Theatre in 1999 as a student, then in 2001 and 2003 as a band member. When you hear her sing, you know exactly why she was asked to become part of the group. Her voice is gorgeous. In fact, many of the women who sing in the Fresno State mariachi group have beautiful voices. You can clearly tell that Fresno loves mariachi music. The Tower Theatre is packed with music lovers for this concert.
If you missed them, don't worry. It's very likely that they'll be back in 2005. Just look out for them in July of 2005. Check the Fresno Bee or the CSU Summer Arts webpage here.

Go for the tour given by Baldasare Forestiere's sister-in-law. She gives a tour every Saturday and Sunday at noon, 1pm, and 2pm. Ignore the sign that says there's a tour at 3pm. The sign is old and needs to be replaced. We went to the 3pm tour and discovered that they allow you to walk around the Gardens, but they don't really give you the real tour. His nephew does a mini-tour and sets you to look around on your own. I have been to the Gardens three times. The first two times was the tour led by Forestiere's sister-in-law. The last time was the mini-tour led by his nephew. Make sure you make it to the gardens before 2pm. Don't miss the real tour.
The cool thing about this place is most Fresno residents have yet to discover it. Of course, when the cafe opens, this well-kept secret won't be so secret anymore.

Guest artists include Joe Goode Performance Group (dance theatre), Quincy Troupe (poet), Pamela Wallace (Academy Award-winning screenwriter), Liam Teague (steel pan musician), Bobby McFerrin (singer), and many others. It's a wonderful program, and there's nothing out there that compares to it.
For those who don't have time to take a whole two weeks off from work, those who are free a night or two can enjoy the wonderful performances at Fresno State given by the guest artists. You can check the event calendar in June 2004 or June 2005 to check for the events coming in July 2004 and July 2005. This is at: www.calstate.edu/summerarts. The events are reasonably priced. All events take place at Fresno State University.

The best thing is feeding the koi fish. I love how they swarm over the food when you drop it over their heads. You can also wander around the grounds and take in the peacocks and the tea house. The park is divided up into seasons, and there are plenty of pretty flowers and plants to photograph. The park can be rented for weddings. There are plenty of benches for sitting to take a picture.
