Summer in Beautiful Western Montana

A June 2003 trip to Montana by SheydaJ

A road trip through Montana's hidden Bitteroot Valley.

  • 3 reviews
Nestled between the jagged Bitteroot Range and the more subdued Sapphire Mountains, the Bitteroot River Valley offers unrivaled serenity without a moment of boredom.

Quick Tips:

Spend an afternoon at any of the myriad local hot springs or go gem-hunting, hiking, rafting, or floating in the rivers and streams of Bitteroot and Sapphires Mountains.

Best Way To Get Around:

This is definitely an off-the-beaten path spot. The perfect destination for a road tripper.
The proprietors of the landmark Sula Country Store (circa 1936) have built several charming cabins on their intimate patch of land in the Bitteroot Valley. Large one-room cabins are great for families with children. Cottages accommodate four adults with private bathroom and well-equipped kitchenettes. Linens are provided. These are welcoming, homey cabins and cottages that give flexibility and comfort to the western camping experience.

The Broad Axe LodgeBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

The Broad Axe is as ideal a location for wildlife viewing as it is for fine dining, western-style. A table with several pairs of binoculars greets diners as they walk in the door in case a herd of mountain sheep or a lonely moose wanders across the glen over which the dining room looks.

The food is cooked and served by a husband and wife team who own the establishment. The breads, desserts, and salad dressings (don't miss the sumptuous blue cheese dressing!) are homemade and accompany prime cuts of steak, fresh fish, and chicken dishes. Be sure to order sauteed mushrooms with your steak -- they are succulent and well-seasoned.

The food and setting certainly do vie for the diner's attention -- a win-win proposition for any visitor in search of a quintessential Montana experience.
