Pico Bonito has one of the few trails that lead up into the rain forest. Several trails lead to waterfalls. This is home to where the jaguars and ocelots prowl, monkeys hide in the trees, and kinkajous play in the dark shadows. With the help of guides, visitors may be able to identify up to 270 species of birds. There is a butterfly farm on the grounds for visitors to enjoy.
Other attractions in the area are a visit to Cuero y Salado Wildlife and Manatee Refuge, kayaking and rafting the Cangrejal River, touring the ancient ruins of Copan, or even taking excursion to the Bay of Islands for scuba diving or sailing. Lancetilla Botanical Gardens is one of the world's largest and leading botanical gardens. A visit to the Butterfly and Insect Museum in La Ceiba is a must. Or visit Jeanette Kawas National Park to see the large lagoons and white sandy beaches that stretch out for miles.
