Colorado in the off-season

A June 2003 trip to Denver by goingsolo

My two-week tour of Colorado began in late May, the off season. I spent a few days in Denver to acclimatize before heading into the oxygen-deprived High Country. As the ninth largest metropolis in the U.S., I presumed there'd something to do in the Mile High City besides adjusting to the altitude.

I'd highly recommend a visit to any of Denver's state parks. There are numerous parks within close proximity to Denver. My personal favorites were Red Rocks Park and Ampitheatre and Roxborough State Park.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

There is a bus system which runs the length of the 16th Street mall. Other than that, Denver is pretty spread out, which makes having a car advisable.

Restaurant

Sevilla is a restaurant and club in the later hours that serves excellent Spanish cuisine. You can't go wrong with either the tapas or the sangria, but the paella is world class.

Wazee Supper ClubBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Another Denver institution, the Waz has been serving pizza and jazz for as long as most locals remember. It's a cozy place with checkered tablecloths and friendly service. If you're not hungry when you arrive, the smell of pizza wafting across the dining room will whet your appetite before you can open the menu. Excellent pizza and sandwiches.

Restaurant | "Denver Chop House"

The Denver Chop House is fine dining in a casual atmosphere. The steaks are fantastic, as are the salads and fresh cornbread, which are served as a prelude. Definitely worth the inevitable wait on a Saturday night.
