For those in the Midwest who aren’t near an ocean, many venture to the shores of Lake Michigan for relaxation, sun, and water. In looking for a 4th of July holiday retreat in Michigan, we ran across Silver Lake.Silver Lake is 220 miles from both Chicago and Detroit, sitting just above Muskegon, Michigan. The area offers a small lake (next to Lake Michigan but warmer) and the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. This area is so laid back, and everyone is so friendly, warm, and inviting that you’ll be planning your return before you even leave! There are several small towns in the area--Mears, Hart, and Pentwater. All within a 20-25 minute drive featuring small restaurants, shops, and parks. The beauty and...Read More

Sitting directly on beautiful Silver Lake with the sand dunes in the distance is the Dunes Waterfront Resort. The resort offers many amenities such as a private beach with dock, indoor swimming pool, game room, hot tub, sun deck, and movie rentals. Half of the rooms are on the parking lot side and the other half are lakeside. We had a lakeside room with a walk out patio to the lake. The rooms didn’t have the typical full size beds but offered larger queen beds instead. Each room provides a coffee maker, hairdryer, and refrigerator. The rooms were very well kept and clean, and the front desk staff was enjoyable and extremely helpful as this was our first visit to the area. They provided an area map ...Read More

Sitting directly on Silver Lake and beside the Dunes Waterfront Resort is the Wave Club Water Sport Rentals. They rent everything from pontoons, paddleboats, and wave runners to 18 feet ski boats. All of the rentals are taken out onto Silver Lake, which measures 1 mile by 3 miles. The temperature of the lake is very warm in the summer, different from Lake Michigan, and runs in the 80s. We rented the wave runners one day and jumped into a ski boat the next. The wave runners were $50 per half hour, with no break in price for the longer you rented it. In order to drive, you either have to have a driver’s license or you can be younger with a boat license. We rented a couple for 1 hour and that was plen...Read More

Silver Lake Sand Dunes & Town

Sitting between Lake Michigan and Silver Lake are the 2,000 acres of moving sand dunes (constantly changing with the winds) open to the public to drive your dune buggy, jeep, truck, 4-wheeler, anything that will get up and down the dunes on. For off-road vehicles, the dunes are open from April 1 to November 1, but townspeople tell us the July 4th weekend is the big season opener. The dunes run one and a half miles wide and three miles long and are still growing and moving each day. This area is considered one of the largest deposits of living dunes on the shores of Lake Michigan. Most of the area is part of the Silver Lake State Park and is open to the public. The dunes are divided into three sectio...Read More

A drive north of Silver Lake took us to Pentwater, Michigan. Pentwater is Oceana County’s only port connecting Pentwater Lake directly to Lake Michigan. The town was founded in 1853 and sits on the western shore of Michigan. As with Silver Lake, almost everything is within walking distance of the marinas and public beach. Pentwater's motto is "where phones take a back seat to fireworks. Where a seat at the Thursday night band concert is better than a seat in the boardroom. Where the only "waves" you’ll make are with a boat. Where your biggest scheduling conflict is between fishing, sunning, and shopping. Where you can "do lunch" with your family instead of your co-workers." While in Pentwater, we ...Read More
