Wonderful Week at the Finisterra in Cabo San Lucas

A March 2003 trip to Baja by marcmuff

Sunset CruiseMore Photos

We went with another couple. It was our second time to visit Cabo and stay at the Finisterra. The other couple had never been to Cabo before. We had reserved a one-bedroom unit for ourselves and a studio unit for our friends; however, upon arrival we were given two adjoining one-bedroom, two-bath units on the third floor in the new section with a wonderful view of the gorgeous pools and the ocean. We were within walking distance to downtown, so often we took the Finisterra shuttle to the bottom of the hill and then walked to the marina or downtown, and if we had groceries or too much to carry we used taxis. The taxi was $7 to downtown and $10 to Medano Beach. We really enjoyed Cabo San Lucas, even better the second time around, and will probably stay at the Finisterra again if (when) we return. Our friends were also thrilled about the whole visit.

Finisterra Hotel
We stayed in a one-bedroom, two-bath unit on the third floor of the Beach Palapa Club section with a view of the gorgeous pools and the ocean from our balcony which was the width of the bedroom and living room and accessible from both. The bedroom had two queen-sized beds, which were very comfortable. There was a couch and chair in the living room that were a little worn, but comfortable for our use. There were large TVs in both the bedroom and living room. The kitchen was pretty well equipped, however, we didn't cook except to heat food in the microwave and make sandwiches. There was an apartment-size refrigerator with two ice cube trays. There was an ice bucket in the unit and there were ice machines at each end of each floor. We loved the great bathrooms, both with tubs and showers.

There are several hot tubs near the gorgeous pools on the grounds and we used them more than the pools during this trip because it was March.

Mama's Royal Cafe
This is a place where the locals seem to gather, along with tourists who hear about this place. It is called Mama's for breakfast and lunch, but from 2:30pm until closing, it is called Felix.

We went for Sunday breakfast. We got fresh-squeezed orange juice (free with coupons I printed from their website). We ate on the charming, shady patio with cloth-covered tables. I had the lobster Benedict -- excellent.

Mocambo Restaurant
This was an excellent seafood restaurant where many of the local folks dine. The servers are very efficient and friendly. The four of us each had different seafood entrees and they were all delicious.

We had two meals at Cilantro. It is a lovely, outdoor, oceanfront restaurant at the Pueblo Bonito Blanco Resort. We had wonderful entrees here, especially the lobster dishes.

Whale Watcher's Bar
We had drinks and food at the Whale Watcher's Bar on several occasions during the week. Everything was delicious. The Bar had just been remodeled and reopened when we were there. There is a spectacular view of the ocean and the sunsets over the Pedregal.

Attraction | "Whale Watching Sunset Cruise on Kaleidoscope"

Sunset Cruise
The Kaleidoscope is a 100-foot catamaran. The cruise included unlimited beverages. We could have selected a dinner cruise, but opted not to -- I believe it cost a little more. We left out of the marina at Cabo San Lucas (in front of the Marina Fiesta Resort) and went several miles out in the ocean. We did see some whales. I had never seen them before -- it was awesome. Then the sunset. The best boat cruise I have been on.

Solmar Fleet Tour Guide
We were going to take a boat from the marina to Medano Beach for $3 per person, but they talked us into the 45-minute tour to Los Arcos, Lover's Beach, Sea Lion Colony, Pelican Rock, and the Window to the Pacific Ocean, after which they took us to Medano Beach (all for $8 per person). It was great.

Cabo Marina
We loved walking around the marina and all the shops, etc. They are building a permanent market place for the vendors. We saw a few cruise ships dock and the passengers being boated to the marina to shop, eat, etc. We had drinks at a couple of the waterfront cafes.
