The green hills of Ireland

A May 2000 trip to Connemara by photogal2000

Connemara Country Cottages is a wonderful place to use as a base for your west Ireland visit. We flew into Shannon airport and spent the first night in Bunratty.

Bunratty has a castle and great shops to give travlers an idea of the wonderful products made and sold in Ireland. Going north from Bunratty, we stopped at the Cliffs of Mour. It is a breathtaking view from the top and well worth the walk up the path. It was very windy so bring your head scarf along. We passed the bridge from the movie The Quiet Man on our way to the condo. That is what we used for a mark to turn onto the road that lead to the condo.

It really is not a condo as you would think but a cottage set out in a group of maybe 10 cottages. It has a thatched roof and a Dutch door and sheep sleeping on the steps to the front porch. The office consists of a small building on property that is only staffed during the day. You are given a key to the office in case you need to use the phone at night since there is none in the units. We overlooked a lake and were surrounded by the Irish hills. It is not a place for someone wanting a pool and amenities, but for the wanderer, it is a great location.

Quick Tips:

Be sure and visit the Commamarra Marble works while you are there. You got a tour of how the mable is found and cut. Also a chance to buy some in the gift shop.

Kylemore Abby is also well worth a visit. It is a breathtaking place and the tour is wonderful.

Another great town is Kong and Ashford Castle is definitely a must see.

Best Way To Get Around:

We rented a car at the airport and that is the best way to get around. It takes a little getting used to driving on the other side of the road, but it is worth it. We took the ferry to the Arran Islands. It is a great way to spend a day on the island.
