There are a few pines here as in Bastrop, but Buescher State Park is more Texas-like with scrubby brush and oaks dripping with Spanish moss. Manmade Lake Buescher is quite scenic and is surrounded by sixty-five picnic tables with grills. Buescher State Park was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps between 1933 and 1937. Swimming is allowed in the twenty-five-acre lake but is at your own risk. The park has 1,016 acres of hilly, peaceful land. Camping facilities and rest rooms with showers are available by reservation. Concessions are readily available. A nature study program includes 7.7 miles of hiking trails. A group pavilion and recreation hall are both made of stone and timber from the park. Wildlife abounds and includes squirrels, deer, raccoons, possums, bobcats, rabbits, armadillos and ducks. The park is wheelchair-accessible.

Quick Tips:

This state park is a bit off the beaten path, so it's usually quiet and not too crowded. If you're travelling west from the Houston area toward Austin, this is a nice detour about half way between.

Best Way To Get Around:

Some of the camp sites are remote, so have a car or bicycle or other means of transportation if you need to run into Bastrop for supplies. Otherwise the park is best explored on foot.
