The first thing you will notice about Bastrop State Park is the smell of pine trees, the only ones you’ll find in the entire Central Texas area. Located 80 miles west of the main pine belt of Texas, these pines were probably a small part of a vast, prehistoric pine forest. As land masses gradually arose through glacier activity, most of the trees moved to the east. Local conditions in Bastrop have kept the ‘Lost Pines’ intact. One of the first records of the trees was made in 1807 by Zebulon Pike, of Pike’s Peak fame. Bastrop State Park was built in 1939 by the Civilian Conservation Corps as part of the New Deal. The City of Bastrop donated 2,100 acres to the State of Texas, and then an additional 1,450 acres in 1979. Park amenities were built using local materials, such as pine and limestone. Bastrop was the first settlement of Stephen Austin’s ‘little colony’. Located on the El Camino Real, Mina (Mee-nah), as it was then known, was founded in 1829 on the banks of the Colorado River. The town was named after Francisco Xavier Mina, a Spanish Revolutionary war martyr.
