Fort Worth any time of the year-with updates

A travel journal to Fort Worth by samepenny

Japanese FountainMore Photos

Fort Worth is great any time, but I love it most in the fall, when the nasty, hot days of summer are over is great! Now it seems that we might get some color in the leaves on the trees. That and a cool breeze after a good rain and I'm happy. Outdoor activities are a bonus for children who have had to stay out of the heat so much of the summer. The tourist areas aren't crowded and you can really get out and see the town. A special treat any time of the year is the Japanese Gardens. Outstanding! Not far from downtown, in the property of the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens, it is a treat beyond measure.

Girl and Quarter Horse
Only 17.5 miles from D-FW International Airport, Fort Worth offers many and a variety of activities. The city is geographically different from Dallas as it is actually the beginning of the land which rises toward the west. Fort Worth has always been a city of beginnings. If you're bored in Fort Worth, it's your own fault. One of my favorite activities is visiting the Fort Worth Zoo. Penguins, tigers and other wonderful animals.

Quick Tips:

Most of the year, It's mostly t-shirt weather, but often a jacket is needed inside due to over use of air conditioning. A couple months during the winter months, you might need a jacket, but over 300 days a year golf is played.

Best Way To Get Around:

We are still a driving town! Public transportation is available, but somethings you will feel that you have to go out of your way to use it. Frankly Texans prefer to drive.

This is an ultra modern hotel with full services, located right in Sundance Square entertainment area. Fort Worth has one of the few downtowns that are safe and fun. Call the hotel for special weekend rates. The rooms are large and well furnished, but often under lighted at night. (so what else is new?) Room service is excellent. The suites have a variety of layouts, some 2-storey. Rooms have interesting views of the Sundance Square entertainment area and the colorful activities. The (indoor) pool is small and has an odd outdoor sunbathing area. I guess the layout is for privacy from the nearby highrise office buildings. I find the health club crowded at times. We don't care for the public bar which is on a balcony overlooking the lobby. This modern hotel is a bit of an oddity in the Sundance Square area which is mostly late 19th century in appearance. Vallet parking is expensive and a self-parking option can be had. Find out what is included when you make your reservation. Restaurant and movie ticket combinations are available as well as restaurant and performance tickets to the near by Bass Performance Hall at 4th and Calhoun Streets. There are several fine restaurants in the hotel, as well as a couple dozen restaurants of all sorts in the Sundance Square area. There are 30 movie screens within a 5 minute walk of the hotel. A discount price mall is connected to the hotel. Bus service to D-FW airport leaves from the front of the hotel. Weekend rates are often very good. We sometimes stay at this hotel when we have a 'do' downtown and don't want to drive home after.

Famous Cafe Aspen Dessert Table
Very nice restaurant. Excellent music in the bar. Entirely separate smoking area--glassed in! Wonderful desserts and cocktails. Very good fish, but specify if you want your fish 'well done'. Open for lunch and dinner Weekdays, dinners only on Saturdays. Closed Sundays. Plenty of parking. Regular customers know to park in the rear and come in through the bar. The full menu is served in the bar and I like it better than the front which can be very noisy. The art works on the walls are for sale. So are the coffee mugs.

Roly Poly Sandwich Shop
Extremely popular with diet conscious TCU students! Varied menu of items that are planned in advance. The usual suspects of turkey, chicken, beef, pork, veg and cheeses. Or you can order what you please. The fillings are wrapped in white or whole wheat 'flat bread'. I read that 'flour tortillas'.

This is a tiny restaurant. The quality of the food is very high. A few tables inside and a couple outside. Most people order, pay, take and drive!

We enjoyed our sandwiches. I had #46 Ultimate Veggie. My friend had a turkey and cheese melt. Whole and half orders available.

Five minutes from the Zoo, Log Cabin Village and 15 from the Cultural District. We arrived at about the same time as a bunch of people who were attending a horse show at nearby Will Rogers Horse facilities. Something for everyone!

Crested Crane
One of my favorate places to visit for a light lunch, walk about and visit with the animals. The trees and landscaping are wonderful. Plenty of places to get out of the heat and sun. A great place for families. We have an annual membership and can visit whenever we please. Zoo food: nothing to brag about. Why can't it be better? Picnics allowed & nice picnic ground is shady and handy. Regular hours are 10 am to 5 pm weekdays and 10 am to 5 pm weekends. (817) 870-7050. Admission: adults, $7, children 3 to 12, $4.50, seniors $3. Children 2 and under are free. Parking $4. for non-members. We especially like the penguins and white tigers. The autumn colors in the landscapping are beautiful. The animals are more lively as the weather cools off. Over 5,000 exotic and native animals can be seen at the Zoo.

Stockards
Busy, busy even on a Monday night. Sundance Quare is in the heart of downtown Fort Worth. Often coming as a surprise to convention visitors, Sundance Quare is usually full of people until late at night. Barnes & Noble Book Store is a fine place for shopping and people watching especially from the second floor area over looking the Bass Performance Hall across the street. The coffee bar in B & N is (whatelse?) a Starbucks. Perhaps it's all that coffee that keeps everyone up so late at night. Yes, Sundance Square is named after the Sundance Kid who really did prowl around Fort Worth (not that big city to the east). Safe, safe, safe to walk around. Plenty of parking, mostly free after 6pm. Endless varieties of restaurants, bars, clubs, many, many movie screens. Not to mention the Bass Performance Hall home of the symphony, ballet and the big shots who come to town to perform. Great people watching! Ten minutes by car from the Cultural District (museums) and ten minutes from the stock yards area. Plenty to do. No chance for boredom here. Also, evening shopping in specialty stores. Ice skating (yes) in a large off-price store mall. Wear comfortable shoes, there's plenty to see afoot. The police officers ride horses and bicycles. A lot of people wear hats. Y'all come! New construction at the Covention Center to the south means that the downtown entertainment area is expanding in that direction. Soon the old overhead freeway (I-30) will be coming down to end the decades long division of downtown Fort Worth into 2 parts. Look for more entertainment areas, hotels, restaurants, shops and bars to come. The downtown buildings are all lite up at night with orange lights to give the appearance of a perpetual holiday--which it certainly feels like. Christmas holiday lights are a great addition. Don't miss this! (817) 390-8711

Attraction | "Japanese Gardens / Botanic Gardens"

Stepping Stones Across a Lake of Koi
In the center of the city, close to I-30 but entirely sheltered from it, the Japanese Gardens which as part of the Fort Worth Botanic Garden complex, is a treat for the eyes and a serene rest for your spirit. Admission only $2. weekdays, $2.50 weekends, seniors 50% off, children 4-12 $1.00, under 4 free. Closed Monday, Tuesday-Sunday winter hours are 10 am to 5 pm. Summer hours are 9 am to 7 pm.(during daylight savings time).

Children love feeding the fish (food is available from dispensers for 25 cents). Now mostly handicapped accessible, the winding paths are sheltered from the sun by a variety of trees. On Botanic Garden Drive which is close to I-30 @ University Drive. Photography allowed, no tripods. No food, no music, no unescorted children. Sounds good to me!

When construction on these gardens began in 1970, we never dreamed that the outcome would be so wonderful. An idea of former Botanic Garden director Scott Fikes. Charles Campbell then director of Parks and Recreation commissioned Kingsley Wu to design the garden. Taking advantage of the site, an old gravel pit, trees and other growing things were brought in to landscape this incredible place. Expanded over the years, gently, the Gardens host thousands of visitors a year without seeming to be crowded even during prime autumn viewing times. When the Japanese maples are red the affect is unbelievable. Every season has its blessings, but I like fall the best.

Beautiful
The astonishing size of the Conservatory and some of the specimen plants in it are amazing. A path wanders through the large greenhouse so that you can easily get around inside to see what's available. The total area of the land of the Botanic Gardens is 109 acres. The Rose Gardens have more than 3,400 roses which reach peak of bloom in late April and October. The Republic of Texas Rose Garden combines the beauty of antique roses with their historical significance. There are several other gardens which are open to the public.

Log Cabin VillageBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Foster House
Telephone (817) 392-6769, hours 9 am to 5 pm Tuesdays through Saturdays. 1- 5 pm Sundays. This collection of real log cabins in a heavily shaded park, is fascinating. A 5 minute drive from the Zoo across University Drive, it's an easy 2nd stop in a day for Zoo visitors. Relatively easy walking, seating to watch demonstrations such as candle making. A couple of the cabins are said to be haunted. You'll have to figure this out for yourself. About a 15 minute drive from downtown, the Cultural Distric (art museums) and dozens of restaurants. Ten minutes from Texas Christian University. Modest gift shop has interesting things such as corn cob dolls and clothing made on 100 year old patterns. No concessions! This place is a real treasure!

The Log Cabin Village is hosted by costumed interpreters who tell the story of the Village and the various cabins as well as the school house, the blacksmith shop and the mill. These are a really fine group of people. Take the time to talk with them.

telephone (817) 332-8551, 10 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday, 1 pm to 5 pm Sundays, adults $3, children and seniors less. An extremely well done museum about the history of the cattle raising industry in Texas. Includes several rooms that appear to be very 'true to life' rather than just museum cases full of stuff. The people on hand are very knowledgable. A few blocks from downtown Fort Worth, but a little too far to walk. A trolly for visitors runs from downtown past this museum to all the major visitor areas in Fort Worth. Public buses also. This museum is a treat and is under visited. This museum really explains a lot about the real Texas.

It is a full day of activities or a good reward for children who have gone along with you to art museums. Free parking next to this museum and across the street. Swans, Perfect Birds
The street address of this center is: 9601 Fossil Ridge roadTexas as it looked prior to civilization. Wild, but safe walking trails. Knowledgable guides. Plenty to do for a whole day. This is on one of the bigest lakes around. Very enjoyable, inexpensive family outing.

New attraction: The Bison Feeding Experience and Hay Ride

The outing is offered seasonally especially during school breaks and will have a regular daily schedule beginning in March. Great fun for all as a hay wagon is pulled by a pick up truck (very Texan) through the 6,900 acres of the Nature Center. Many wild animals will be seen often close up including deer and prairie dogs. The bison feeding is actually a bit of surprise fun for children as many have no idea how big a bison is. Telephone the Nature Center to see when this is running.

Real, tiny bathtub
Located in the far back of the Livestock Exchange Building, this wonderful museum is seldom crowded. Staffed by dedicated volunteers! Very interesting place. Yesterday there was a featured exhibit on the role of the Irish in the history of Fort Worth.

Well worth a stop in. No charge, but put a few bucks in the glass box! Air conditioned! Remember this is a working office building. All sorts of people trying to earn a living. Please don't open any doors that don't say 'visitors welcome'. George is trying to work!
