a rainy week in nawlins

A June 2003 trip to New Orleans by snowboarderx

It was my first trip to Nawlins, but it definitely will not be my last! Even the daily downpours couldn't dampen what turned out to be a truly fun and exciting trip.

On my list of best things to do:
We took the Grayline Swamp and Bayou Tr and got a close-up view (almost in the boat!!) of alligators by resident Cajuns. Tip: go on a cool day when they're most active. I also enjoyed the aquarium. Tip: Set aside a full day to really see it and enjoy it. Same goes for the zoo.

Quick Tips:

1. Book your activities as a package deal if you want to save money.
2. Go prepared for inclement weather. It can be hot and sunny one minute, and pouring down rain the next.
3. The French Quarter and Bourbon Street are strictly for adult entertainment at night, no place for children.
4.Don't stray very far outside the French Quarter -- be safe.

Best Way To Get Around:

Definitely do not rent a car -- you won't be needing it and the parking rates are outrageous! If you fly in, I would suggest taking a shuttle from the airport to your accommodations and either walk or pay the per day for the trolleys and shuttle buses.
Best Things Nearby:
In the heart of the French Quarter and very close to all activities.

Best Things About the Resort:
It's hard to pick a best thing, but I'd have to say the location -- close to all activities.

Resort Experience:
The staff was very pleasant and helpful. The room was very clean. The maid service was exceptional.

I had the redfish plate for dinner and I can only describe it as some of the best fish that I have ever eaten. That says a lot considering I worked on some of the West Coast party boats as a deckhand and have eaten more than my share of seafood in my lifetime!

I seemed to enjoy it as much or more than the children did. It was very informative and I enjoyed seeing all the different species that are native to the region.

Attraction

We scheduled our day around the shows, which were on a tight schedule, so make sure you map it out in advance. There is so much to see that you need a full day to see it all to enjoy it. I liked the gorilla and orangutan displays, as well as the Asian elephants and sea lion show.

French MarketBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Community Flea Market at the French Market"

The prices were lower than many of the prices in the French Quarter, but many if not all of the vendors were charging the identical price and it was hard to barter for a lower price. Their prices seemed to me to be fixed. We found a place just outside the flea market that was going out of business and had everything marked 50% off, so I'd advise you to look around.

We took one of the many ghost and spirit tours that are available. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history of New Orleans, which goes back three centuries. I would recommend that you research the history of New Orleans before you attend Mardi Gras to be able to fully understand what is going on.
