Off to Austin/San Antonio

A June 2003 trip to Austin by margodb

My husband and I went to the Austin, Texas, area for a week just because we had never been there before. Our trip was very enjoyable with many surprises, great food, and good weather. Stayed in a timeshare and went to areas between Austin and San Antonio.

San Antonio
We spent one day in the San Antonio area visiting the Alamo and Riverwalk. Since I enjoy historic locations, the Alamo was wonderful and informative. I could easily have spent about a week at the Riverwalk with all the wonderful restaurants, shops, and of course the nearby mall.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

Not knowing the San Antonio area at all, we found it easy to get to the downtown area and found a nearby parking lot right away. They even provided a map of the downtown area so we wouldn't get lost or lose the parking lot.

Lake Travis

Best Things About the Resort:
It's a small timeshare with only 18 units, which is sometimes nice.

Resort Experience:
This timeshare is situated near the shore of Lake Travis by a marine where boat rentals, fishing, etc are available. It's fairly quiet because it's small but not very convenient to shopping, restaurants, etc. You have to be willing to drive a ways to those places. It is an older place and a bit run down. They have no pool but you do have access to the Lakeway Inn pool just a short walk up a hill.

Also the only restaurant that's near is at the Lakeway Inn, which is very good but not what you always want.

Oasis Sunset
The Oasis Restaurant is really hard to describe. Dining is mostly outdoors with tables on over 40 different decks cascading down a hillside overlooking Lake Travis. It's an unusual look that's lots of fun--beautiful view and not to be missed if you're in the area.

I like "different" places and after reading about Oasis here at RCI Community, it became a must place to go. Also, you must stay to see the sunset over the lake. After having dinner, move down a few decks to the bar/appetizers area to view the sunset, which was a good one and worth going for.

Gristmill is a restaurant in Gruene that is in the old mill in town with the oldest dancehall in Texas right there also. The food at Gristmill in wonderful, as is the service, friendly staff, and scenery overlooking the Guadalupe River. The town is very small with little local shops, antique shops, etc. It's historic in the sense that it was settled by German immigrants with some German influence still around.

Riverwalk
Fabulous place for dining, shopping, and sightseeing. There are numerous restaurants of various types and many shops along the river. One end of the Riverwalk has the Hyatt Hotel and the other end has the Marriotte Hotel with a shopping mall. Inside, the mall even has an IMAX theater. An easy place to spend at least a day and evening, if not more.
