Melbourne During the Open

A January 2003 trip to Melbourne by jdumoulin

My wife and I took our honeymoon to Australia and started off in Melbourne at the time of the tennis open. Melbourne is a more European city than the rest of the country. There's a big buzz at the tie of the open--it's fun to be there even if you aren't there for the tennis. Besides touring the city I recommend taking some side trips to the nearby gameparks and to Philips Island.

I definitely recommend using AAT Kings. They are the largest tour operator in Australia. They arranged my entire trip thoughout Australia, and it was great. The bus trips were comfortable. The guides were knowledgeable. Everything ran smoothly the entire two weeks I used their services.

The Penguin Parade is a definite must-see in the Melbourne area. Each night the fairy penguins (small penguins) waddle in from the sea to burrow in the sand dunes for the night. You'll see literally hundreds of penguins waddle up the beach past you into the dunes. It's quite a site. It's also quite loud as they make loud crying noises when a penguin goes into their neighbor's burrow by accident!

This is a great animal park outside of Melbourne where we saw the duck-billed platypus, hundreds of species of birds, reptiles, and of course kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, and tazmanian devils. The ride out and back to Melbourne is a fun ride through the hills. There are also some wineries nearby.
