San Diego minus the touristy stuff

A travel journal to San Diego by Based in San Diego

I have lived in San Diego for two years now. Prior to living here, I lived in Hong Kong, Jerusalem, Toronto, Washington, Bologna, Paris, and a few other places. I will tell you what I like and what I don't like about this Southern California town.

Hotel | "Hyatt Regency La Jolla"

I think this is a good hotel to stay at in San Diego. The location is very convenient for a number of reasons. It is next to highway 5 meaning that you can get downtown in 10 minutes or to various beaches up and down the coast quite easily. The rooms are solid. I really like the design of the grounds and the adjoining buildings. The fitness area is nice, but not incredible. Lots of machines.

Do not miss Cafe Japengo. It is a fantastic restaurant in one of the buildings at the site. Superb sushi. Excellent Asian Fusion. Don't miss the Duck and Goat Cheese Salad. Also the spicy tuna sashimi salad is great. All this is available as room service! Thursday to Saturday nights the bar at Japengo is full of young good looking people.

I have been successful bidding for this hotel on Priceline. Winning bid was $50, which comes to around $60 with fees and taxes. Well worth it!

Restaurant

I am really hesitant to let this cat out of the bag. It is a great restaurant with very reasonable prices. I just don't want it to get too popular.

Dumpling Inn is owned by a Taiwanese family. They specialize in noodles and dumplings. My favorite dumplings are the Dumplings in Hot Oil Sauce. Maybe not the catchiest name, but if you like spices, treat yourself! The steamed small pork buns are actually soup dumplings. Exquisite. Do not miss Kung Pao Seafood or Kung Pao Seabass. Also important is the Black Bean Sole. And here is the biggest secret of Dumpling Inn . . .

Shhhh.... not on the menu.... homemade noodles. We order them with chicken and tofu. Truly incredible. Don't tell anyone, OK?
