Smashing times in Sydney

A March 2003 trip to Sydney by jessdoughty

Quote: I spent three weeks in Sydney and stayed with friends in their flat, which helped as I didn't have to pay for a hotel! It was the holiday of a lifetime--truly amazing place and a visit here makes you realise just how unique the Australian way of life is!

Manly Beach is a 30-minute ferry ride away from Sydney. Ferries come every five minutes and when you're pulling away on the ferry, you see views of Sydney Bridge/Opera House -- it's an amazing experience. My friend timed the return so we got to see the same view, but at dusk! I took photos of the bridge with the sunset behind -- a powerful sight to see! At Manly, there's a famous surfers beach. I liked Manly so much, I went back twice on the ferry -- great for families and couples too. *I recommend a trip to the amp tower, which is the tallest tower on that side of the hemisphere, it towers over sydney city centre and can be seen from everywhere-we could even see it from our flat balcony in coogee wh...Read More

We walked into the waterfront restaurant straight off the street in the daytime and asked for a table and didn't have any problems getting a table. The service was great from start to finish. It's a famous seafood restaurant situated in the main city harbour and as you eat your lovely food, you look out onto the Sydney Opera House on your right and the Sydney Harbour Bridge on your left! Perfect! It really is surreal eating there, like a dream come true. My friends had eaten here previously on Valentine's Day. They had an amazing evening and they said it was so romantic to look out onto the opera house and bridge at night! We also saw a big yacht go by with a big white wedding being held on it, so it'...Read More

You walk around looking at all the tanks, which have been made up. You get to see seahorses, starfish, tropical fish, techno glow in the dark coral, a huge alligator, massive sharks and stingrays, tuna, and loads of bright coloured fish darting around. The Pacific is renowned for its bright and beautiful sealife, and you really do get a good view of it all here. It was strange to see the famous blue bottle jelly fish too! It showed you pictures of what this deadly jelly can do to a human -- it paralyses and can kill you within an hour if you're not treated in time. So you learn as you go along too. I wouldn't take kids under five years old -- they may get a little scared by the huge ...Read More

As I spent my 25th birthday in Sydney, the friend I was staying with wanted to make it a special time for me, so she booked us a show at the Opera House one night! It was a lovely surprise, so if you want to surprise someone special, I'd suggest booking a show too. She booked it by phone in advance, which I'd really recommend you do. You don't have to wear formal clothes, but you can if you want -- it's up to you. We watched a British artist -- his performance was inspiring and it was great to give a guy from Manchester some support on the other side of the world! There was an interval halfway through and we drank champagne outside the Opera House and we had our photo taken there with...Read More
