A March 2000 trip to Hanoi by MarthaVincent

I had dinner recently at a local Vietnamese restaurant that brought memories of the trip of my lifetime. From the eerie rock islands jutting out of Halong Bay to the museums and ordinary life on the streets of Hanoi, it was fascinating. Minh Anh Restaurant's food, even though served in mysterious courses, was delicious.

The view of the lake was beautiful. The personnel was courteous and helpful and dressed in local finery. The food, even unfamiliar items, was delicious. We partook of no salads, only cooked food, the whole trip.

With a short drive from Hanoi one can take a day long cruise through the dramatic rock islands of the bay. One loses track of how many photos were shot. One magnificent geological formation after another presented itself. Lunch was included. A stop at one of the larger islands provided a tour through caverns in which there were carved goddesses and monuments. Intrepid merchants had tempting goods on board for the return trip.

The stage is a pond. The puppets move through the water mysteriously and sometimes in boats as they tell various folk tales and perform dances. The music, color, and pageantry is marvelous.

This is an impressive monument like those seen in our nation's capitol. There are crowds of native people waiting for a glimpse of the former leader of their country. Nearby is the Ho Chi Minh Relic Area at 1 Bach Thao- Ba Dinh. There are buildings in which President Ho lived and worked furnished as when he was there.
