Eating an actual MEAL at the Pump Room is expensive, but it's a great place for a light cream tea in the afternoon.

Quick Tips:

Take advantage of the free walking tours that start by the Roman Baths and the Abbey. You get a great overview of the town.

Best Way To Get Around:

Bath is a very walkable city. Yes, there are some hills, but not a problem if you just take your time.

Taking the waters
Eating an actual MEAL at the Pump Room can be an elegant if pricey affair. (The food looked excellent.) You can, however, experience the flavor of the place for much less. They serve a very reasonably priced little 'cream tea' snack that will allow you to experinece the live classical music, chandeliers, and Georgian grace for a pittance.

Carvings
Bath Abbey has been torn down and built up again many times during it's history, but the current incarnation is over 500 years old. You are free to photograph inside as long as there is not a service going on, and there is some truly wonderful stained glass in there. The carving on the outside is magnificent as well. If you go one of the free guided walking city tours locals who love their town will fill you in on the details of the 'hidden meanings' behind some of them.

Pultney Bridge
The Pultney Bridge is unusual in that there are shops built directly on it. There supposedly are only a couple bridges like that in all of England. Frequented more by locals then tourists, it seems, you can have a nice quiet cup of tea on a chilly autumn day with a marvelous view of the river from a little tea room right the bridge.

Roman Baths
Take the tour ... it's worth the money. The money does, after all, go to helping to maintain this wonderful historic site. AND they will tell you all sorts of things you would never know without paying for the tour. Listening, you will understand why people have been coming here quite literally for centuries. The statues in the photo are of a quite recent vintage, but the baths themselves date to Roman times.

Free Walking Tours of BathBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Walking Tour"

Each day during the 'season', and on weekends other times, dedicated locals give a guided walking tour of the area that includes a history of the Baths, the Costume Museum, the Circus, The Royal Crescent and more. It does take a couple hours, but it is well worth it. You will learn a great deal about this city from people who truly love it ... and they will point you to other sights that are NOT on the tour that you can investigate on your own afterwards.
