Overview

We liked visiting St. Michael's Russian Orthodox Church. The Raptor Center was closed for the winter season when we tried to visit it.

Quick Tips:

Eat at Victoria's and shop at the Chocolate Moose right down the street from Victoria's. Bayview Restaurant is another good restaurant.

Best Way To Get Around:

Walking is quite possible in this small town. There's taxi service. We walked from the airport into town over the bridge. There are not many places where you can say that you walked into town from the airport. The cold of winter was more of a discomfort than the distance we walked.
Westmark Shee Atiká is a chain operating in Alaska. It has conference facilities and a restaurant. The room was a standard room--clean with a comfortable bed. They charge for local calls.

Twin DragonBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Twin Dragon Restaurant"

Twin Dragon Restaurant was recommended by a local merchant. Keen on trying out the only Chinese restaurant in town, we entered once we found the place. On first impression, the atmosphere wasn't very good and heating in the place may be a problem on really cold days since there are no double-entry doors to help keep the heat in.

We ordered a set dinner, but this soon proved to be a mistake when the soup arrived. The wonton soup was low quality: thickened broth with one or two overly wrapped wonton skins that were overcooked in the soup, with the skin absorbing too much liquid and very little meat filling. The rest of the food came and was second or third rate, barely passable in quality. When the bill arrived, it made the rating of this restaurant go from somewhat recommended to not recommended. I could bear low quality, but combined with a rather high price, this was unacceptable. Save your money unless you really want to experience this yourself.

I love good, inexpensive Chinese food. This is neither good nor cheap. If you have no previous experience of how good Chinese food can be, you might be convinced that this is as good as it can get. This place misses the mark and gives Chinese cuisine a bad name. I suggest travelling to a place with a large sizable Chinese community and trying some of the Chinese cuisine. Go to China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vancouver, San Francisco, Toronto, or New York City. Actually, all you need is a good chef who knows his craft. A large Chinese population isn't needed, but if you see a lot of Chinese patrons, they must like the restaurant.

It's too bad it's the only Chinese restaurant and puts out low quality food. They need a chef trained in Chinese cuisine or they should bring in a competitor that would do much better quality food.

Westmark Shee Atika : Raven Dining RoomBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Westmark Shee Atiká - Raven Dining Room"

The Westmark Shee Atiká - Raven Dining Room has a large dining facility and fine quality food. Service was prompt. I went there for their breakfast. They served eggs benedict.

Bayview RestaurantBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Bayview Restaurant is one flight of stairs up from the ground floor. The service and food was very good, and they were able to handle a large group fairly well. Eggs Benedict is served here.

Nugget RestaurantBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Nugget Restaurant is well-known for their pies. If you even make a stop for a rest of 20 minutes, you have enough time to quickly get off, pick up a pie, and still get back onboard for your onward flight. That's what some people do, and they come back with little boxes containing pie. However, I think it's too sweet. They'll even do a particular flavor pie if they have the ingredients and if you call the day before. If you have more time, their other food is good too.

Victoria'sBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Victoria's Restaurant, part of Sitka Hotel, has a nice comfortable homey atmosphere, a friendly staff, and an atmosphere unlike the conventional big-chain restaurant environment. The food was good. This is a more personable, unique dining experience.

St. Michael's Russian Orthodox Church is one of the major sights to visit. There are old artifacts inside. They have souvenirs that may be purchased. Call to find out when they're open to visitors.

White ElephantBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

White Elephant is near the rear entrance of the Westmark Shee Atiká and sells donated goods. They do a brisk business. Even if you find nothing to buy, it's fun to browse if you like that sort of thing.

The proceeds go to the healthcare of the locals who have no other source of support by other government agencies.

Chocolate MooseBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Chocolate Moose is a wonderful little chocolate shop filled with items that any chocolate lover would enjoy. They have some suger-free chocolate items for diabetics and import some items from Joseph Schmidt Confections of San Francisco. This is one of the best places in Sitka to shop.
