A travel journal to Mobile by Tideone

Mobile is Alabama's seaport and it's oldest city. There are many things to see and do when you visit.

My most enjoyable thing is visiting Mobile in the spring and seeing all of the azaleas in bloom. It seems as if every yard you pass has some sort of azalea bush in bloom.

A lot of history has been made at this old hotel but the accommodations are luxurious. And if you are planning a trip to Mobile during Mardi Gras, then this is the hotel to stay in. The parades go right past your front door.

There are a lot of good seafood restaurants in Mobile but Roussos has to be the best. The Alabama Travel Council and the Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel has named the restaurant an 'attraction' because of the autographed menus but I recommend you go there because of the food. Try the seafood platter - it is delicious. I am getting hungry just writing about it.

The Original Oyster House is located on what the local folks call the causeway - the original road across the bay before I-10 came along. At one time there were numerous restaurants, primarily seafood, located along this strip, but Hurricane Fredric in 1979, destroyed most of them.

Located just down the road from the Battleship Alabama, this is a great place to eat before heading back into Mobile. Their specialties include seafood platters and steamed seafood and their gumbo isn’t bad either.

This beautiful gardens and home began as a fish camp and as Walter Bellingrath would fish, his wife would plant flowers. This is one of the only places in the world where the gardens were planted first and the house was built around the gardens.

This is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. No matter what time of the year you visit, something is always in bloom. But spring is the best time to visit.

Attraction | "Fort Conde Museum and Welcome Center"

This is actually a replica of the 18th century fort the French built when Mobile was ruled by France, but it is still a fun place to visit. This should also be your first stop when visiting Mobile since the welcome center is located here with plenty of information about the city.

Attraction | "USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park"

The Battleship Alabama came home in the 1960's when it was saved from the salvage yard by the nickel and dimes of Alabama's school children. I was in grade school when the state began to raise money to bring the USS Alabama to Mobile. I believe if you gave a dime you received a card good for one admission to the battleship. I think I finally used it about 20 years later but they still honored it and even gave it back to me to keep as a souvenir in my scrapbook. In addition to the USS Alabama, there is also the USS Drum, a WWII submarine, in the park. The park serves as a memorial to all services and veterans from WWI to Desert Storm. The park is open daily at 8 a.m. except Christmas. In addition to the ships there is also an enclosed pavilion with 12 airplanes and numerous exhibits from WWII. A few of the aircraft that are on display include a B-52, an F4U Corsair, a B-25 bomber and a Huey helicopter.

Before the casinos opened just a short distance away in Biloxi, the dog track was the place to go for a great night out and to bet a few bucks. Now is a different story.

The crowds have gone on to Biloxi but the dogs still race every night at 7:30 p.m. except Sunday with matinees at 1 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
The great thing about the dog track is admission to the grandstand is free and with $2 bets you can have a great night of fun for less than $20.

Admission to the clubhouse is $2.50 and there is also a restaurant with pretty good food.

Christmas TownBest of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

Christmas Town is a store where Christmas goes on all year round. Located at 4213 Halls Mills Road, the store has over 25,000 square feet of Christmas decorations, gifts and collectibles, all under one roof. I used to love to go in the store in the middle of the summer, when the temperature was in the 90's and the humidity was about the same, and just walk around looking at all the decorated Christmas trees. Suddenly it would seem a lot cooler but I think that may have been the store's air conditioning.
