Close to DC

The Spotsylvania area is close enough to DC to be convenient while being far enough into Virginia to visit much of the rest of the state on day trips.

Quick Tips:

Head into DC pretty early and you'll find parking is not a bit problem. We parked next to the mall everyday for nothing then took the Metro if we wanted to go to the zoo or other places. Finding food around the mall was a little tricky. Other than hot dog stands, there aren't many eating places within the museum complex and the prices are high. I suggest getting off the mall a few blocks for a wide variety of food. We didn't even attempt to go on the capitol tour because you had to get there extremely early to get tickets.

Best Way To Get Around:

The metro subway system is clean, cheap and easy to figure out. Get a guide book ahead of time and map out your day so you get the most of it since museums, etc., are usually open just 10am-5pm.

Best Things Nearby:
DC is about a one-hour drive depending on the time of day. It's almost all interstate so it goes quickly. You can get into the city in time to visit the museums, zoo, etc. when they open. It's also convenient to traveling the rest of the state. Richmond is a nice trip and Montecello is an easy drive.

Best Things About the Resort:
This was a two-story individual unit with a huge porch with rockers and a picnic table.

Resort Experience:
It's in a wooded park with a lake, tennis courts, basketball gym, etc. There's lots to do if you don't want to drive to DC or elsewhere to see the sights. It was a little cool for the outdoor activities during spring break. Our unit did not have washer/dryer in the unit. You have to drive to the laundromat within the park and use coin machines, but it seemed very secure and we had no problem leaving our clothes and playing at the clubhouse while they washed and drived.
