Overview

Floral Pavilion: Flower specimens from all over Britain (and the world) are displayed by grower. The most amazing part is the sheer quantity of wall-to-wall flowers. Chatting with the Locals: With local growers on hand and an overall friendly atmosphere, it was great place to find out what Britons are really thinking. I had a great chat about carnivorous plants and a woman who over heard my American accent whispered in my ear: "Give my love to New York when you fly back." Picnic on Blenheim's extensive grounds: Even more impressive than the flower show is the massive display of English gardening and landscaping on the Blenheim Pal...Read More

The Restaurant Tent had two parts. One for a fixed price lunch (~£13) or afternoon tea (~£8) for which reservations (via phone or internet) were required (unless you wanted to wait a LONG time). The other part had a cafeteria/convenience store style with prepackaged sandwiches, salads, soups, coffees, cold drinks, and an extensive collection of cakes. The prices here were very high. Sandwich £4, bag of crisps (English for American potato chips) £2, drinks £2. The quality was pretty good though (I had a baguette with brie, tomatoes, and basil), redeeming the over-priced fare some. There was seating at white plastic lawn table and chairs inside and outside of the tent. For a while a three...Read More

The crafts tent and plethora of surrounding vendors was probably my least favorite part of the show, although it did have the added bonus of distracting quite a few of my fellow visitors, leaving the flower and food tents less crowded. For those with homes to fill or gardens to purchase for, there is an amazing array of items from fountains to specialized lawn chairs, seed distributors and even contractors to build sun rooms or sheds. There were also smaller items like backpacks specially equipped for picnics, cases of French wines, and -- who could be without -- the aerolatte, which foams milk and coffee for instant lattes. Even better, in the crafts tent you could have your...Read More

When visiting the "extensive grounds" at Blenheim palace, I am always reminded of Mrs. Elton's comments in Jane Austen's Emma: ". . .the grounds, I assure you, as far as I could observe, are strikingly like . . . My brother and sister will be enchanted with this place. People who have extensive grounds themselves are always pleased with any thing in the same style." You don't have to have your own grounds (in fact few could afford to have any this size today) to appreciate the grounds at Blenheim. Coming around the drive you'll see that the front of Blenheim Palace looks out onto a large lake crossed by an enormous old stone bridge. From there the grounds exte...Read More

Show Flowers under the Big Top

The main flower show is under an enormous circus size tent and it is obviously a performance. The growers have selected their best, often in large quantities, and also do their best to display them -- sometimes even with little ponds! We had a great time walking up and down the aisles taking our picture in front of the walls of flowers or just admiring the size or color. If there was a particular organization to the flowers I didn't notice. There are even some suspicious entries for a "flower show" including a bonsai tree exhibit and an artfully arranged fruit and vegetable display (although does an onion wedding cake really look that appetizing?). The majority of entries, however, are trul...Read More
