My wife and I were on a driving tour to Montana and visited a few sights made famous by Laura Wilder's 'Little House' books on the way.

It was fascinating to see the site where the Ingalls family lived from 1869 to 1870 when Laura was around two-years-old. The site remains much as is was over 130 years ago.

Quick Tips:

This site is a little off the beaten path near Independence, Kansas, but there are signs posted off US Highway 75 a few miles south of town pointing to the Laura Ingalls Wilder homestead.

Best Way To Get Around:

The only way to get there is by car.
Informative Sign
On August 22, 2002, we returned to the Ingalls'' homestead near Independence, Kansas for a tour of the buildings. I also got some closeups of the informative signs posted around the property, which probably hasn''t changed much in the past 130 years. The school building was moved here from a few miles away years ago, but is authentic, and the Ingalls home is a reproduction, but located on the original site.
