Quote: Chicago is the kind of city that one needs to warm up to (in more ways than one). I always had to come here on business, so it never felt as if I had made a conscious decision. Several years later . . .

What is so unusual about this stay is that I had no idea where I was going, as reservations were made for the show staff (myself included) by someone else. The only comforting thing about it was that it was within walking distance of the Hyatt, where our convention was being held. Well, it turns out that Hotel 71 was a choice boutique hotel with all the amenities you can dream of. It is also possible that the above rate was a group rate, since there were well over 10 people in our group. Hotel 71 was originally designed as a condominium dwelling and this may account for the spaciousness of the rooms. We were on the 18th floor, where one could get a fabulous view of the Chicago River, the steel...Read More

I had been invited by our Japanese suppliers to this restaurant, which was a 10 minute ride from the hotel. We were to meet here at 8pm, and as I thought I arrived early, I waited in the sitting area, slowly breathing in the decor. Kamehachi is an authentic Japanese restaurant that will not disappoint you if you luxuriate at the thought of impeccable service, and exquisitely prepared food. This is the newest of three locations, the other two being in Old Town Chicago and Northbrook. It is a blend of traditional elements and nature: all along the walls are very thin tree trunks which are spot lit from below; the sound of water can be heard from the continuously gurgling fountain. ...Read More

One of the benefits of going to work in any big city is that our organization holds the "President's Reception" in a funky, and almost always, art related venue. So, the party to usher in the new president of the National Art Materials Trade Association took place here, and we had to pay $50 per person. I imagine that this takes into account the rental fee paid by the organization for the evening. Should you and/or your company be interested in renting it out for a corporate event, go here for information. It's a great place to mingle, meet people you haven't seen since the last show, a year ago, and put on weight. For a bit of...Read More

The Navy Pier, at one time, was not this exciting. It changed the face of downtown Chicago for the better. It’s quite a complex, in every sense of the word, and just as much as it can be a great family outing locale, it’s also a very romantic spot to watch the sunset over the lake and Riva’s Café offers a great view and fantastic food. As I have been there more than once, I am going to try to draw a composite of my experiences for you. Chicagoans are blessed with a magnificent waterfront which happens to be Lake Michigan; alongside of that strip of blue are many things, including the Navy Pier, luxury waterfront properties, Chicago also shows off some of its magnificent architecture if you ...Read More
