Just the feeling of walking off the plane and stepping on Nicaraguan soil was a memorable experience. I took this trip as a mission team member and loved the experiences I had. I would recommend everyone should take time to see a volcano while you are in the country. There's nothing like looking off into a steaming volcano. We actually had to back up in to our parking space in case of an eruption! Also, Lake Nicaragua, which is quite a sight is another "must see" in this country. We drove to Rivera and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Quick Tips:

To enjoy the country, you have to accept some things will be different and far more primative than in the US. But if you have a true interest in the culture of this people, there is much to love and enjoy about Nicaragua.

Best Way To Get Around:

I would stay away from public transportation in Nicaragua. Some cabs are safe. But much caution should be taken concerning transportaion. Also, be cautious in walking. Drivers absolutely demand the right of way.

Restaurant

The Metro Centre is a safe place for the family to eat. I learned quickly to appreciate a basic and safe eating environment. This place is essentially a shopping mall with a very nice food court inside. You can eat basic American food, but there is a wonderful Cajun restaurant there too. My wife and I can have a nice filling meal for under $12 total. There is also nice shops to visit in the mall.

On the Edge of the Volcano
What a extreme feeling to feel the heat of a volcano as you stand within feet from the edge of this lava pit! It's like nothing I have ever seen before. Quite a history to this place too. Check out the museum concerning this volcano!

Story/Tip

Aerial View
Nicaragua. Some may not be immediately drawn to visit this once war-torn country. But to me, Nicaragua was an enjoyable destination. I admit, at first, I had some concerns in travelling there. But we went there as members of a mission team and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We saw beautiful lush vegetation, lakes with powerful waves near the Pacific, even volcanoes. I highly recommend this country to the serious and cautious traveller.

Nicaragua offers a range of interesting sights to see from boisterous city life to villages as unique as you will find anywhere. Also, there are natural wonders comparative to other tourist areas.

If safety is a concern, that is understandable considering the recent past of this country. But I never feel truly unsafe while in Nicaragua.
