Beachcombing, deep sea fishing, surf casting, sun worshipping, golf, shopping, dining and long walks on miles of beautiful sand beaches are some of the highlights of a visit to Gulf Shores. Don't be put off by my 'Redneck Riviera' terminology -- the Gulf coast in this area and along the Florida panhandle earned that title years ago for the informality and relatively low costs involved, compared to some pricier beach destinations.Quick Tips: While there are plenty of hotels to choose from, the value of a kitchenette or a condo is the ability to stock refreshments or boil some of those wonderful fresh gulf shrimp in your own digs. It doesn't get any better. Also be aware of the subtle differ...Read More

Room rates vary by season, view and amenities. The family suites on the ground floor were not very old to begin with, but they were renovated again after Hurrican Opal in 1995. They are well worth the premium over a standard room, although there is nothing wrong with those either. Gulf front rooms have higher rates. Rates go up weekly during the month of March. Some rooms have kitchenettes. There is a Denny's Restaurant in the hotel and the pool area is nice. Frankly, it would be difficult to find a better location than this hotel and it is well worth reserving far in advance -- it's well-known by anyone who has ever walked the beach at Gulf Shores. As a bonus, the Best Western on the Beach al...Read More

Brett/Robinson manages some of the finest condominium buildings along the beach in the Gulf Shores-Orange Beach area. Particularly if you are staying more than a week, give thought to the idea of a condo rental since you can get a lot for your money on an extended stay. Condo rentals normally involve a deposit and some cleaning fees in addition to the rental fee.

If solitude is what you have in mind, it's worth planning far in advance to secure one of the 144 beachfront units that stretch out in either direction from the main state-owned resort hotel. Rates are competitive or perhaps a bit lower than many area hotels. The units have different configurations and they're located in a dozen separate buildings which are set well back from the beach, for plenty of privacy. Kitchenettes in some units provide a welcome opportunity for families to prepare some meals 'at home'. Meals are also available in the main lodge. Gulf State Park also has 468 campsite and 21 cottages on a freshwater lake across the road from the main complex. An interesting amenity of the ...Read More

The lodge at Gulf Shores State Park offers reasonably priced, filling meals in a comfortable atmosphere. Buffets and menu service are both available. It's an excellent value for the money. (Check out the corned beef on the breakfast buffet -- it's NOT the canned stuff!) There is a time for fine dining, but when you just want a solid meal without breaking the bank, this place heads the list.

Orange Beach and Gulf Shores share the Gulf of Mexico's larges sportfishing fleet, so vacationing anglers who prefer not to gear up for saltwater surf casting or pier fishing on their own, have plenty of options. Individuals charters are costly, but I've gone out several times using 'walk-on' chaters out of Zeke's Landing. You join a 'pick-up team' of 15 other people fishing from 40-52 foot boats on a six-hour trip. Twenty miles out in the gulf, we were cranking in red and vermillion snapper from 100 feet of water -- sometimes two at a time. Bottom fishing is not difficult. On two outings, it was no problem to bring in 35-45 lbs. of snapper and trigger fish. (At the price of quality ocean fish l...Read More

Just simply walking the beach anywhere between Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is a relaxing experience and many people enjoy the social aspect of this activity in the more developed areas of the beach. Gulf State Park offers the very best beachcoming. However, since its two and a half miles of white, sugar sand beach simply don't get the traffic that occurs in the hotel/condo portions of the coast, it is possible at times to have this beach nearly to yourself.

Story/Tip

Spring vacations for northerners often conjure up images of tropical cocktails in a palm-studded piece of paradise, but the reality can be more sobering. What should be a respite from gruesome winter weather and the daily grind can turn into a frightfully expensive week of fighting traffic, unsatisfying visits to packed beaches -- or marching a few steps an hour to the audio equivalent of Chinese water torture: 'It's a small world after all... it's a small world after all....' So take this piece of advice and give Gulf Shores, Alabama, a look. The reasonable costs and laid-back atmosphere have earned the region the nickname of 'The Redneck Riviera' (and that just a little discouragement to keep th...Read More
