Chicago - A Resident's Perspective

An August 2001 trip to Chicago by Local

If you want to experience Chicago from the perspective of someone who lives there, here's the skinny.

Chicago is a clean city that is easy to get around. If you like shopping, architecture, or art, then this is the place for you to visit. If this is your first time, your itinerary should include stroll down Michigan Ave, an afternoon at the Art Institute, or an architectural tour along the river. Quick Tips: If you have control over your visit, try coming to Chicago in the summer or fall. My uncle, from Anchorage, Alaska once told me, "The worst winter I ever spent was in Chicago". Coming from an Alaskan, that should say something.

Best Way To Get Around:

Getting around by taxi and the "El" is just plain easy. Additionally, parking is relatively abundant (compared to New York and San Francisco), but you'll have to pay.>
Goose Island is a fine micro-brewery that is home to what is perhaps the best burger in Chicago. I can't recommend any of their other food because I never miss the chance to eat a burger when I'm there. The atmosphere is casual. You can dine in a traditional dining area, a bar area, or a room with a big-screen TV.

Attraction | "Lincol Park Zoo"

The Lincoln Park Zoo is conveniently located at the bottom of Lincoln Park. It houses lots of animals, from birds, to lions, to polar bears. Best of all, the zoo is free. It doesn't need to be a strenuous event. It's the perfect setting for a casual walk if you're in the mood.

Attraction

The Silver Palm is a hidden treasure in the West Loop and is a relative newcomer. The cocktails are fantastic -- try their Sidecar. The bar is actually partly an old train car. It is located right across the street from the Chicago Dramatist Theatre, so if you are catching one of their productions, plan to make a trip to the Silver Palm afterwards.
