This is a classic mountain lodge (big wooden beams) settled comfortably on the edge of a deep river gorge. The rooms are small but the bed was extremely comfortable. There is a dining room, gift shop, large lobby lounge area with big fireplace and a small indoor pool. The hot tub is bigger than most but a few families will quickly fill up the pool. There is a nature center nearby and rangers offer guided programs. A good family destination. Kids will ask for coins to play in the video game room. Maps indicate the various trails leading away from the lodge.

This is not elegant dining but the food is good. We chose to have most of our meals here while exploring the park. There is a small breakfast buffet and the dining room is spacious with a rustic look.

A Walk in the Woods

Attraction

Hiking varies from wheelchair access to extremely hazardous. You can walk along a level, paved trail to the high gorge overlook to see the Blackwater Falls far in the distance. Or take the well crafted wooden stairs down into the gorge and see the falls from an observation platform quite close. If punishment is your objective try hiking straight down over the cliffs of the gorge, but be prepared to pass warning signs urging you not to do it! There are a number of beautiful hikes into the hemlock forests where blazes on trees keep you on the trail. Also enjoy trying to find the fourteen water falls that here and there spill out of the woods and over the edge of the gorge.

Trip to the Falls

Story/Tip

The primary reason to go to Blackwater Falls State Park is of course to see the Blackwater Falls. You drive around to the other side of the gorge from the lodge and take a trail that ends up being quite a few steps down over the edge of the gorge. The steps are wide and as easy to navigate as steps can be. There are multiple levels of side platforms where tired persons can catch their breath. To gain perspective on what you see and experience, there are a number of interesting historical books for sale in the lodge gift shop that offer a great insight into the first explorers and settlers of the area. At a spot like this you understand the phrase "Wild and Wonderful West Virginia"! We were...Read More
