Mosul : the gate to nothern Iraq

An August 2001 trip to Mosul by fredff

A pleasant city surrounded by incredible historical sites, the city is a few degrees cooler than Baghdad and a lot more pleasant. The center is also in a much better state of preservation.

Mosul is a must if you are visiting Iraq. The main Assyrian sites Ninive and Nimrud are a few kilometres away, and the Tomb of Jonas allows you a great view over the city center.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

The best way to get around is by walking. On the other hand, the Assyrian sites are a few kilometres outside the city so you will need a taxi to visit them.
This museum is smaller than the one in Baghdad but it displays stunning Assyrian Winged bull statues and a very impressive statue of a Lion. The rest of the exhibition are equally interesting, and it gives you very good insight to the surrounding Assyrian sites.

Attraction

The tomb of Jonas is a very important pilgrimmage site for Jews, Christians, and Muslims. The site itself is quite impressive as you have to climb hundreds of stairs to go to the top of the hill. The view from the top is very nice.
