There is a great historical walking tour (approx 1hr) which gives you a concise understanding of the village and the wonderful Villa Melzi. The highlight of my stay was "Il Perlo Panorama" Hotel (www.ilperlo.com). Situated in the hills overlooking both Bellagio (3km away) and the lake, the views are amazing. It is family run (mother & son. Both speak excellent English and are very friendly. All this for only 66euros double ensuite room per night. The perfect moment was watching the sunset over the lake from the terrace while sipping a glass of chilled Soave.

Quick Tips:

Bellagio has many good restaurants. Highly recommend "La Punta" on Via Vitali (situated at the tip of promontory)...wonderful lakeview, good & reasonably priced food, and very professional staff...only drawback is no house wine- cheapest bottle was 17 euros. Another restaurant well worth a visit is "Alle Darsene Di Loppia" on Via Al Porto about 15mins walk south-west of centre (tel 031 952069)..peaceful setting with an excellent & original menu..staff very friendly and speak excellent English (with an American accent)...average price of meat/fish dish only 10euros. Last but no means least is "Albergo Ristorante Silvio" situated 10mins walk from centre heading towards Como..offers excellent fresh fish dishes and wonderful views of the lake..plus wine is only 9 euros a bottle!!..the accommodation is excellent too-double room 85 euros per night (tel 031950322). La Pergola restaurant was disappointing- excellent views but food was poor and staff uninterested (maybe i caught them on a bad day!).

Best Way To Get Around:

Like with most places in Italy its always best to walk. If arriving by car then there is free parking available (5 minute walk from centre)..carry on along Via Valassina pass the ERG garage on left go straight on at mini roundabout (ignore no entry sign as advised by locals) and then 200 metres on right is the car park. Just follow signs for La Pergola hotel. Hopping on a ferry is a must during your stay. If short of time then take the 15 minute ride to Varenna (just as beautiful as Bellagio) and visit Villa Monastero with its wonderful gardens. Boat tickets can be bought on the lake front in Piazza Mazzini- cost 5 euros 20 cents for return and boats depart every 30 minutes or so. Read Less

This totally refurbished hotel has been run by the same family for four generations. Situated in a quiet location with superb views of the lake and only 10- to 15-minute walk from Bellagio centre. All rooms were equipped with telephone, private bathroom, and satellite TV. The restaurant is also excellent(see seperate entry). Parking is available.

Set in a tranquil and picturesque location approximately a 10-minute walk from centre of Bellagio. Staff including the owner Maurizio Salvaderi are very friendly and speak perfect English (although they are polite enough to let you practice your Italian). The fish is excellent as its all freshly caught that day on the lake and the simple pasta dishes are just delightful. Also, they don't put service charges on the menu like most restaurants do . . . they don't assume.

Restaurant | "La Punta"

This restaurant is set in an ideal location, right on the tip of the headland seperating the lake in two. The views from your table are magnificent particulary when the sun sets over the lake. The food is very much on a par with the views. Fresh fish is the specialty, but they do offer excellent meat dishes too. The staff are friendly and very professional. Advisable to book at weekends simply because of its reputation. If staying in the centre, then there are signs for the restaurant.

Dont believe the hype!!! This restaurant has an excellent reputation . . . it wasn't apparent the night we visited, well two nights to be exact. The first night we arrived without a reservation and were advised to return in 30 minutes when there may be a table (there were eight empty tables in view, two of them outside). So we returned 30 minutes later and were then advised that the chef had finished cooking (9:30pm) and nothing was available. They weren't interested. With its reputation, we thought we would give them another try the following night. Hey presto, we got a table but two hours later wished we hadn't. The owner, Silvio, catches the fish with his son, Christian (who doubles up as a waiter) in the morning. They then cook it and serve it in the evening. Whether it's trout, salmon, or sardines, you will be spoilt for choice here. Popular with the locals so the atmosphere is wonderful. Wine is also cheap . . . only 9 euros for a bottle of Soave. If after all the wine you are too drunk to walk back, then stay in the hotel.
