The Zambian Victoria Falls

A travel journal to Victoria Falls by African Explorer

Zambian BorderMore Photos

Just a short walk over the Zambia/ Zimbabwe borer brings you to a much less crowded and regulated view of the breathtaking Victoria Falls. You can spend a wonderful time in Livingston Zambia without the hassles from tourist vendors and high prices.

Quick Tips:

Don’t wear jewelry. Don’t hire or tip children to show you around.

Best Way To Get Around:

You can either walk to Livingston from Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) by going over the Zambesi bridge and border station or you can drive across. If you choose to walk be careful for the Baboons along the side of the road they can be aggressive if taunted. There are also many taxi’s to take you across the bridge but they are “tourist” expensive.

Kubu CabinsBest of IgoUgo

Hotel

The accommodation consists of the Teak cabins which have 2 beds in each. The Honeymoon suite is nice but very expensive. They have one family Chalet that holds 8 people, and then my favorite are the Safari tents. Camping is available for $11.00 per night.

This place rocks! Situated in the middle of the mighty Zambezi River, 35 miles upstream of the Victoria Falls on an island! They pick you up in dugout canoes, and you camp on the island. There is a small store and mosquito nets available on the island.

Hotel

Nyala Lodge is kind of pricey but lots of fun, you can go on a guided tour of the falls, 3 hour game drive, or 3 hour sunset river cruise on the Zambesi. They also offer free transfers from Victoria Falls airport.

Attraction

The northern side of Victoria Falls is much less developed than the southern, you can walk right up to the falls and cliffs and there aren’t any sidewalks or ropes. We found many species of wildlife from Monkeys, Baboons to small squirrel type animals. When the wind is blowing to the south the view from Zambia is not covered in mist. I personally like the Zambia side because there are less “group” tourist and the local people less intrusive.
