A visit to Wartrace is like stepping back in time. Although the stop signs that once said "Whoa" are now a thing of the past, life goes at a slower pace in Wartrace.

A highlight of any visit to Wartrace is a stay at the Walking Horse Hotel.

The Walking Horse Hotel is a very unique place to stay

Walking Horse Hotel

The hotel was built in 1917 but has all the modern conveniences. Each room has a private bath, and there is a handicap accessible room located on the ground floor. All other rooms are located on the third floor. There is not a lot of nightlife in Wartrace, but there is a big front porch with rocking chairs where one can sit back, relax and enjoy the cool of the evening.

The Strolling Jim Restaurant

People are known to drive from as far away as Huntsville and Nashville for the Sunday buffet lunch because it is that good. But don't worry if you can't get there on Sunday. Meals during the rest of the week are just as good. The restaurant is located inside the Walking Horse Hotel which is another reason we like staying there.

Wartrace Historic Downtown Walking Tour

Wartrace's Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features homes that date back to the town's beginning in the early 1850's. Many of the town's early businesses are now home to specialty and antique shops, and one can spend many pleasant hours browsing through these stores.

Grave of Strolling Jim

No visit to Wartrace is complete without stopping by to pay respects to the First World Champion Tennessee Walking Horse, Strolling Jim. His grave is located behind the Walking Horse Hotel beside the pasture where he spent his final days.

The Blockade Runner

Stepping inside this store is definitely like taking a step back in time. In addition to swords, pistols, muskets and all other Civil War memorabilia, the store also carries a complete line of mid-19th century men's and women's clothes.
