This destination is unfortunately very neglected at the moment due to the political/security situation. I think that many people would find Israel an exotic/exciting destination, and don't believe everything you see on CNN. The country is a small one, easy to get about, and you will see many interesting sights here. After all ,it is the holy place of three major world religions.

Quick Tips:

Use Egged busses to get around, they are clean, air-conditioned, and easy to navigate on. Buy a pass and save money.

Eat falafel or shishlik on street corner stands. Tasty and cheap. You can put in as much salad as you like. Visit The Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth, but be careful of the heat.

This museum is a general museum of history, but also has good sections on the history of the Middle East and changing temporary exhibitions. The surrounding gardens have a nice sculpture exhibition, including scuptures by Rodin. There are also art exhibits here.

Wailing Wall
This is the site said to be the only remaining wall of the Jewish Temple. It is always a throng of black-garbed religious Jews praying. At religious holidays, it can be very crowded and even more interesting as a cultural experience.

There are also a few beggars who hang around waiting for the unsuspecting tourists (rather rare these days), and soldiers and young boys celebrating their bar mitvahs (coming of age at 13 years old).
