Lake Garda
We stayed in the historic section of Sirmione, on Lake Garda. This part, known as 'old town,' is a very busy place with lots of tourists squeezing through the narrow streets to get to the various shops, eateries, and gelato stands (and this was only early May!). It was a little to crowded for me and had very few historic sights. Overall, other that the view of the lake and the one castle, Sirmione was pretty dull.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

Walking. Only taxis with special permission are allowed in.
Lake Garda
We never expected to have such a lovely room at such a good price ($46. for a double w/ a private bathroom). Our room had a great view of the lake, a balcony and another large window with a view of the castle. The hotel also has a restaurant that has outdoor seating along the lake. We did not eat there because the food was a little to pricey for us.

Attraction

This 13th Century castle has no roof or furniture, but has a good view of the lake and the town. It is fun to walk around and get some good photos. Other than that there is no information about the history of the castle.

Getting ThereBest of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

To get to Sirmione you have to take a train to Desenzano, then a taxi to Sirmione (about 20 minute ride). Be sure to have your hotel call a taxi for you when you leave, because it is very hard to find them. There is also a visitors' center that can help you right outside the gates in the round building.

Lake Garda
If you want to get away from the crowds you can take a walk along the paths at the end of the peninsula of old town. There you can enjoy the green grass, trees, and flowers. Walk to the end and you can also see the site of a former Roman palace.

Eating OutBest of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

There are many good restaurants to choose from in old town. Most of them have outdoor seating, and some have good views of the lake. We were lucky to find a good restaurant, with a great waiter (a Roberto Benigni look alike), who put on a show for us when he carved our fish.
