The Tryp is one of the newer resorts in Varadero, about 15km out of town near a lagoon and wildlife reserve. Like everything else in Cuba's tourist enclaves, it's a strange combination of Western-style luxury and Soviet-style chintz: row after row of enormous brightly colored condos, some 800 rooms in total, abutting a gorgeous white sand beach kept free of the usual hawkers and hustlers by the admittedly unnerving presence of government guards. The rooms, by Cuban standards, are deluxe, though Westerners may chafe a bit at the little things: towel and toilet paper shortages, a few ants in the bathroom, "firm" beds. The buffet is . . . interesting, but a safer bet than the à la carte restaurants. They have a lot of Western-style dishes here like pizza and hamburgers that seem to have been prepared by people whose only experience with them was satellite photos.
But if you're ok with the quirks, this is certainly a gorgeous spot to sit by the pool or the ocean.
