Iowa City, Iowa, is a great college town with the University of Iowa located here. Great sports, restaurants, and shopping!

The University of Iowa has a wonderful campus and the home of the Iowa Hawkeyes! Of course being from the Hawkeye state, I am only a little prejudiced! The campus is a beautiful place to visit and roam around. Of course, Iowa City is a large city with lots of other activities and shopping. It is also home of the famous University of Iowa hospitals. There are major interstates that go through Iowa City, making it easy to travel anywhere. It is just a short drive to Cedar Rapids. Coralridge Mall has some wonderful shops and there is an outlet mall in Williamsburg just a few miles away right on Interstate 80.

Mondo's Tomato PieBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Mondos is a wonderful place to eat. It is a favorite of ours when in Iowa City. The bread dipped in flavored oil is delicous!Since we are usually there during Iowa football/basketball games, it is usually pretty busy. It is a must to try!

Restaurant

This is an excellent dining experience! This is located on the river that runs through Iowa City. The atmosphere is very nice and decorated beautifully. The steaks are delicious and the best. That is all I have ever had there because they are so good. This is a fine dining restaurant and very classy.

What can I say about Iowa wrestling! The home of Dan Gable as coach and now Jim Zaleski! This is where it is done. We have enjoyed all of the Iowa sports for many years. Big 10!

Amana ColoniesBest of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

The Amana Colonies are located a short distance from Iowa City in Amana, approximately 18 miles away. Actually, it consists of seven small German villages. It is also a National Historic Landmark.

In Amana you can walk the streets and visit all sorts of little shops - candlemaking, basketmaking, wine-tasting, old fashioned candy, an out of this world bakery, and one of the finest furniture stores and woollen mills in the area. There is a smoked meat shop, and beautiful grandfather clocks!

The restaurants all feature German fare. Their homemade sauerkraut is scrumptious! They also feature country fried chicken, wiener schnitzel, smoked ham and pork chops, barbecued ribs, and homemade desserts, like German fruit pie. This is all served family style. This is a must visit if you are in the Iowa City area.

You can park and walk the streets to most of the shops in Middle Amana. It does take a car to drive to the rest of the colonies.

There is a wonderful golf course located just outside of Amana. There is also a beautiful lily pond that fills with blooming lilies. There are several bed and breakfasts in the area and some small hotels.
