High San Diego Desert Getaway

A March 2003 trip to San Diego by pcnetwrx

We drove from Phoenix to the San Diego Country Estates, a Gold Crown resort about an hour outside of San Diego.

The best things to do at the resort are play tennis, utilize their playground if you have small children, or just enjoy a fire in the fireplace with the Duraflame logs that the resort provides at no charge.

Quick Tips:

Be sure to allow adequate driving time to get into San Diego if going to any attractions there - it's at least an hour drive to get to most places. Also, try to already have your discount tickets for attractions because the resort does not normally provide these.

Best Way To Get Around:

You will need a car if you want to do anything outside of the resort as the resort is quite remote from any major shopping or attractions.

Best Things Nearby:
The resort has tennis, golf, and a playground for the kids, but pretty much everything else is somewhat of a drive.

Best Things About the Resort:
The best things here were the quiet area and the children's playground.

Resort Experience:
While our stay at the resort was enjoyable, our expectations from other Gold Crown resorts were higher than what we found here. While the room had recently had carpets and some other things redone, it still had an older ambiance to it and the bedroom had an odor similar to a cat accident. The amenities were good and we still enjoyed our time. I don't know that we will go back again though.

Attraction

We enjoyed our day at Legoland, but it is definitely geared more for children. Although we were there from opening to closing, we did not get through the whole park, but going with a three-year-old tends to slow you down quite a bit. One of the lines also was pretty long and we spent an hour for just that one thing, even though the park did not seem that crowded. Still, it's worth going to at least once if you have kids.
