An April 2003 trip
to Weston by dalefried
Quote: I visited Vacation Village at Weston. The resort is very pretty, but it is 25 minutes from Ft. Lauderdale Beach, and 45 minutes from South Beach. That is where all the fun is, so at night we would drive to either location. In the future I would rather stay at the beach locations.
Unless you are looking for an additional timeshare week, do not go to a presentation. The salesman that we had was very shady and pushy. We were stuck there for 4 hours. After we spoke to our friends who also went to a presentation, we realized that our salesperson was lying to us. I wrote an email to RCI about this and I am still waiting for a response from them.

Airboat tours run every 20 minutes. The Tour costs $10/pp. With the Discount White Card that the resort gives you when you arrive, the cost is $7.50/pp. It is worth $7.50, but not more. First the airboat takes you to a separate island. There's a guy there (missing two fingers!) straddling a real alligator, opening its mouth and other things. Then he does the same thing to the other alligator. The unnatural things he was making the alligators do, I actually felt bad for the alligators! That is about 10 minutes long.
Then we get back in the airboat and one alligator swam right over to our boat, which was a perfect photo opportunity. Then the pilot took us to a nest of baby alligators. That was nice. There is a gift shop (ho hum). We spent about two hours there. It was something to do, it wasn't expensive, and it wasn't too far away.

Attraction | "Sawgrass Mills Outlet"
We decided to go to the Oasis to eat dinner. The Oasis is a wing of the mall with a big movie complex, restaurants, and entertainment venues. We ate dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe. There were cool t-shirts on display in front. We bought a Hard Rock t-shirt for the 40-year-old. When we finished dinner, I wanted to go into the Ron Jon Surf Shop, which is also in the Oasis area for the teenager. I figured that would be a cool store. Well, I bought a surfer necklace with a shark tooth for him and another surfer t-shirt for the 40-year-old guy. I wished we could have gone into more stores, but we were really tired.
A word of advice: don't go to this mall on the weekends because that's when all the teenagers start coming in. They come in packs! When we left on Friday night, the parking lot was full, and they were swarming all over the mall. Not that they caused any problems, but it got very, very crowded.

Attraction | "Shelbourne Hotel Karaoke Bar"
The Shelbourne Hotel is a famous hotel in Miami Beach, but this lounge was funny. The vinyl cushions are torn and there are drink rings on the tables. On the walls are pictures of famous people with the owner of the bar. I mean really famous people - The Temptations, The Supremes, Gladys Knight, Wayne Newton. I thought maybe this was a great place in the 60s and 70s, but then I saw a picture of the American Idols, Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini, so they had to be there recently. The DJ admitted that he is around 70-years-old. My husband bought us two Cokes in plastic cups which cost $5 each. Do you believe this? This sounds like a negative review, right? Wrong.
This place has every song ever written. The sound system is great, the DJ had a good personality, and he played great club music if no one wanted to sing. The people were a lot of fun whether they sang well or not. They were from all over the US as well as international visitors. You can have a lot of fun if you can look past the ripped cushions and stained tables.
