Exploring Padre Island

An August 2001 trip to South Padre Island by ScottReid

You'd love to visit the beaches here. There are so many things to do on this little island down in southern Texas!

When you cross the bridge that connects South Padre Island to the rest of Texas, you feel like you are in your own little world! The island feels like a little country of it's own. The landscaping is really nice with lots of flower beds lining the streets, and palm trees on many of the street corners.

We enjoyed the beach which is open pretty late at night. There's a new mini Sea World where you can touch the sting rays and star fish. There are seals and so many different types of fish there as well. It's a great learning experience for everyone.

There is also an old naval ship where you can take tours. It's actually really close to the beach, so you really don't have to travel far.

Quick Tips:

It does get really hot in the summertime, so bring your sunscreen.

If you really want to enjoy your visit, you should get here really early. You could visit all the attractions and do all the tours in the morning and right after lunch, and as it gets closer to dinner, you can get out to the beach.

Best Way To Get Around:

We had a car, but as long as you can get to the beach, a taxi would work because there are many attractions right in the vicinity of the beach.

Attraction | "Hot! South Padre beach"

It's a really nice, long beach, so there's lots of room for some great fun in the sun!

I would get there around 3pm when the sun wasn't going to be as hot so that you don't have to worry about getting a sunburn as much.
