Shopping - there are plenty of malls here! Irmo (a suburb that you can reach via I-26) is loaded with shopping and restaurants - and the newest and cleanest mall. Nightlife - Ask anyone to point you towards Five Points. There are a lot of college/singles here at the bars and clubs (due to the University which is located downtown). The Elbow Room has some great bands. There are also nice coffee shops in this area, and a few restaurants like Yesterdays. Daytime activities - Take the kids to Riverbanks Zoo (off of I-26). The capitol is a great place to have lunch and enjoy the sights and sounds of the city. Head to Finlay Park and enjoy a porch swing overlooking the fountain....Read More

Chesnut Cottage Bed and Breakfast

We spent the first night of our honeymoon in the bridal suite at Chestnut Cottage. The house was Mary Boykin Chesnut's wartime home, and it definitely has southern charm and elegance. The bridal suite is upstairs in a separate cottage off of the back of the house. It has a canopy waterbed and a whirlpool bath. The bath itself was perfect for two, but the bathroom ceiling was angled a little low. The decorations are exquisite, and the service is excellent. They bring a full breakfast to your room in the morning, and they worked with us to hammer out...Read More

Columbia Marriott

This is a large, multi-story hotel that costs more than others in Columbia because of its perfect location (right downtown). It has a restaurant and bar, several conference rooms, and all of the amenities that would be necessary for a business or pleasure trip. The hotel is more targeted for business travel. Even the honeymoon suites (we checked them out before deciding where to spend the first night of our honeymoon) are your standard hotel rooms. They do have nice king beds and closets, and a great view of the city skyline, but not much more than that. This hotel is great for convenience and the view, but for romance check out the Chestnut Cottage entry.

After much research on hotel features verses cost, I decided to book a room at this hotel during a visit back to my old stomping grounds. It's a new building with lots of amenities, from cordless in-room phones to large televisions with cable stations. Everything was very clean and spacious, and a newspaper arrived under the door each morning. A large continental breakfast selection is available in the morning, including warm French toast and cinnamon buns. The staff was helpful, and the hotel wasn't booked, even on a Friday night during graduation weekend. This hotel is located right across from Columbianna Mall, where you can shop until you drop (trust me!). There are a number of restaurants, ...Read More

California Dreaming

Restaurant

If you're in Columbia, you need to enjoy California Dreaming. It's located in the building that was once the train station. It has very high ceilings (which means it can get pretty loud) and a social atmosphere. Try the California Dreaming salad with the house dressing. It comes with everything you can imagine - cheese, bacon, almonds - and a croissant with honey. They have a bar and serve excellent virgin strawberry daquiris.

Garibaldi's of Columbia

Restaurant | "Garibaldi's"

This restaurant has a fine quaint atmosphere with excellent food (unique dishes) and wine. During the day, and sometimes in the evening, it attracts the business crowd. It is small and can get a bit loud when it's full. But it can also make for a very special date. This is where my husband took me on the evening he proposed. He ended up not proposing there because there was a lot of business talk going on around us. But the food and service are still excellent.

If you've never been to Fuddruckers, you've never had a hamburger! And their thick-cut fries are excellent. This was the perfect place to take my British friends who came over for my wedding. They wanted to go to McDonald's for burgers! They were completely impressed with Fuddruckers' amazing burgers.

Lizard's Thicket

Restaurant

Quote:
If you're not from the south, you have to visit Lizard's Thicket for downhome southern cooking. Collards, cornbread, fried pork chops, and sweet tea! The waitresses wear the most tacky country-patterned dresses with white frilly aprons. The restaurant may be a little less than pristene, and you order from a huge board behind the cash register. You'll get a lot of food for your money here, and seriously, you don't find a restaurant like this in other parts of the country.
